Mesa Associates is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to join our nuclear services team and contribute to the design, analysis, and construction of nuclear facilities. This is an opportunity to play a critical role in the engineering and design processes for commercial nuclear power generation and lead Mesa's Nuclear Division Mechanical Engineering discipline. The position is hybrid working a minimum of 3 days in the office, typically Tuesday through Thursday, with the ability to work from home the remaining workdays. Candidates must be able to travel to plant sites when needed (approx. 6-8 days/month with ability to support longer durations).

Education/Experience/Licensure:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university (required)
  • Master of Science or other advanced degree in engineering (preferred)
  • PE registration (highly preferred) – or ability to obtain PE License within one year of employment (required)
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in design and 4 years’ experience in design of modifications in nuclear (DOE or commercial) plants 
  • Experience working with multiple operating nuclear clients and vendors (highly preferred)
  • On-site and past unescorted access (highly preferred) or ability to obtain unescorted access at an operating or construction nuclear plant (required)
  • Experience with Industry Standard Design Procedure IP-ENG-001 (required)
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, NFPA)
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite). Additional software skills including Bluebeam, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Vault, Plant3D, Inventor, ReCap, SolidWorks, FARO Scene, and other 3D rendering programs (preferred)

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee proposal developmental and guide other engineers in the development of deliverables for nuclear projects within the Mechanical discipline
  • Report to an assigned Project Engineer and Project Manager on multi-discipline proposals and projects and act as a Project Engineer for Mechanical projects when required
  • Act as a technical point of contact for the customer, leading discipline specific engineering teams, and providing area expertise in development of industry standard design and calculations associated with design and construction of commercial nuclear modifications
  • Be responsible for working with other engineers and designers to prepare design change packages for modifications at operating nuclear plants and other associated nuclear facilities
  • Be proficient in preparation of engineering change packages (EC’s)
  • Prepare scoping documents and proposals to determine extent of modifications required, preparing cost estimates for engineering/design activities for Mechanical
  • Conduct field walkdowns to determine existing configuration of plant structures, systems, and components
  • Perform a broad range of Mechanical design activities to support development of design change documentation

 

Successful candidates will:

  • Must have design engineering experience associated with commercial nuclear sites
  • Possess the ability to interpret codes and, regulations, and standard practices
  • Be able to demonstrate adaptability; must be proficient in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving issues within a nuclear power plant environment
  • Have effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
  • Possess excellent communication skills and ability to interface with customers and internal team members under a matrixed organization

 

A strong background in commercial nuclear design and developing engineering competencies is required.
