VicRoads is progressing too. In August 2022, we started on a new chapter when the Victorian State Government partnered with Aware Super, Australian Retirement Trust, and Macquarie Asset Management to operate registration and licensing services on its behalf.

We work collaboratively with the Victorian State Government to ensure we fulfill regulatory requirements, deliver State projects and safeguard customer data. The Victorian State Government retains sole responsibility for road access, infrastructure and safety.

About the Opportunity 

The Manager Data Engineering & Platforms will oversee the development, engineering, implementation and operation of VicRoads’ data platform, ensuring that the data platform is developed strategically and meets the goals and objectives of business. Reporting to the Head of Data, the Manager Data Engineering & Platforms will lead a team of data professionals, providing technical guidance and fostering a collaborative environment to drive innovation and efficiency.

• Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of data engineers, managing daily operations and supporting new development. Ensure alignment with organisational goals, while providing technical guidance on data platforms and architecture.
• Data Platform Delivery: Oversee the end-to-end development, implementation, and support of data platforms and pipelines, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and aligned with business and strategic objectives. This includes managing the engineering of resilient data pipelines, maintaining clear and accessible documentation (designs, frameworks, policies, and standards), and ensuring the platform evolves to meet future needs. Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices to drive innovation and enhance data capabilities across the organisation.
• Data Security & Governance: Implement and enforce robust data security and governance practices to protect organisational data and ensure compliance with relevant privacy regulations. Proactively identify and mitigate risks related to data architecture, platforms, and products, while establishing controls to manage and prevent potential data issues.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with stakeholders across the organisation to understand their data needs, deliver technical solutions, and ensure alignment with strategic priorities. Work closely with teams to support the successful commercialisation of data products, driving value from data assets.
   

About you 

You are an experienced data leader with over seven years of proven success managing technical teams and data platforms. With deep expertise in modern data technologies—such as Databricks, dbt, Spark/Python, Confluent Kafka, and Power BI/Power Platform—you bring strong architectural knowledge and hands-on capability. You have experience across cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and a solid command of data integration, orchestration, automation, and warehousing.

You understand the importance of data security, governance, and compliance with privacy regulations. You take an active role in identifying and managing risks, including fraud and corruption, and are confident in applying frameworks like the Fraud and Corruption Control Framework to uphold integrity within your teams.

You collaborate effectively with stakeholders, translating business needs into scalable solutions and supporting the commercialisation of data products. Skilled in Agile and DevOps environments, you lead with clarity, mentor technical teams, and communicate with influence. Bonus points if you bring knowledge of VicRoads systems, metadata management tools, or experience applying AI and machine learning in data platforms.
