JOB SUMMARY: The Underwriting Manager will lead the underwriting team, ensuring the effective assessment and management of risk. This role will oversee the daily operations of the underwriting department, mentor and guide the underwriting staff, and collaborate with senior management to develop and implement underwriting policies and strategies.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters.
  • Ensure the team meets performance goals and adheres to company policies and procedures.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback and training.
  • Oversee the underwriting process, ensuring timely and accurate risk assessment and pricing.
  • Review and approve high-value or complex cases and provide guidance on underwriting decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the VP, Underwriting & Data Insights to develop and implement underwriting policies and strategies.
  • Monitor market trends and adjust underwriting practices to maintain competitiveness and profitability.
  • Develop and maintain underwriting manuals and guidelines.
  • Utilize data insights to inform underwriting decisions and improve risk assessment accuracy.
  • Prepare regular reports on underwriting performance, trends, and key metrics for senior management.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions.
  • Work closely with other departments, including sales, to ensure seamless operations.
  • Communicate underwriting policies and decisions to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent the underwriting department in meetings and presentations.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of underwriting experience in dental or health insurance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Proficient in data analysis and reporting tools.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of underwriting principles, practices, and regulations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Preferred: 

  • Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., CPCU, AU) preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Incumbent must be able to communicate effectively. 
  • Ability to operate personal computer and related technologies.
  • Incumbent works primarily in a remote environment or a private or shared office environment.
