Position Summary

The Safety Director collaborates with leadership, employees, outside risk consultants, and other stakeholders to establish and achieve the Company’s safety objectives, eliminate the risk of injury and property damage as well as ensure regulatory requirement compliance. A successful candidate will build ongoing preventative safety measures and utilize influence and training to ensure all leadership are working towards the desired Company-safety behaviors. This role is critical to ensure proper safety training is available, ensure work hazard assessments are conducted, and provide/sustain effective policies and procedures for the organization to create and maintain a safe work environment. This position will also create and communicate relevant metrics to the Executive safety committee and leadership.  

 

Job Description

  • Selects, trains, and develops a team of high performing safety professionals 
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and management of Company-wide influential programming that involves all employees to adopt a safety-conscious mindset 
  • Establish preventative measures and standardization, where appropriate, to create and maintain a safe work environment 
  • Stay informed and provide guidance to stakeholders on issues relating to health and safety and regulatory updates that may impact the organization 
  • Collaborate with leadership on an Emergency Action Plan and serve as primary contact 
  • Collaborates with leadership to assess job duties to determine appropriate safety protocols and identify hazardous conditions, consulting on ideas to make the jobs safer as needed
  • Regularly review and update site safety protocols and identify potential hazardous conditions
  • Ensure all regulatory (ie, OSHA and other) requirements are in place and appropriate personnel have the resources to fully-execute requirements 
  • Ensure the safety team is maintaining appropriate safety logs and documentation
  • Partner with external vendors, such as the Company’s worker’s compensation carrier and broker, to manage and develop strategies that increase safety behaviors 
  • Provide managers and supervisors with safety training content for daily, weekly and monthly training meetings. 
  • Organize and oversee all required safety training such as Worker Protection Standard (WPS), Hazardous communication, respirator, lockout/tagout, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Engineering, or related field; or equivalent knowledge gained through a combination of education and experience
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA 1910 and 1926 standards, EPA compliance and other government regulations
  • Experience implementing effective controls to mitigate risk
  • 5+ years of experience managing the occupational health and safety program in an industrial environment
  • 3+ years’ experience directly managing others 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to present information to groups in an organized and engaging format
  • Valid driver’s license to comply with the company driver policy 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification and Instructor Certification 
  • OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30 certified 

Job Setting & Physical Demands

Employees in this position work primarily indoors but may be required to ambulate between locations within a large outdoor environment. The role is largely sedentary, however some administrative duties such as filing are quired. This would require the ability to lift files, open cabinets, bend or stand as necessary. To perform the job successfully the candidate must be able to use a computer and other standard office equipment such as phones, copiers, fax machines, etc. Fluency in the English language and the ability to see, speak, hear, read, and write are required. The ability to travel by all means of transportation to meet business needs is required, such as a cart around the facility. Work hours may fluctuate to accommodate seasonal work requirements and occasional support and training for evening and/or weekend shift employees. Ability to commute between locations as needed is required. 

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds unassisted is required, up to 50 pounds with assistance.
