The Director of Statutory Reporting will report to the AVP of Statutory Reporting and will play a key leadership role within the Statutory Reporting Team and Corporate External Reporting and will provide guidance and mentoring to an experienced team. The Stat Team performs the following responsibilities for 18 P&C companies and one Life insurance company within The Hartford: closing the statutory ledger, all NAIC reporting, Statutory audited financial statements, the Stat Outlook, Risk Based Capital, Schedule P, state compliance reporting and many other internal and external deliverables.

The Statutory Reporting Unit is within the Corporate Controllers Organization and is primarily responsible for managing the statutory financial reporting process to the NAIC and the State Departments of Insurance. The Unit is also responsible for preparing and supporting state compliance filings, rating agency surveys and other statutory based governmental requests.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office (Hartford, CT) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities:

  • Managing accurate and timely production of quarterly and annual basis external regulatory financial statements under statutory accounting standards.
  • Preparing Risk-Based Capital calculations and Statutory Outlook process as well as presentation to senior management and Capital Management.
  • Reviewing and managing the month end closing and financial reporting process including account analysis and reconciliation.
  • Managing and responding effectively to inquiries from regulators.
  • Identifying and overseeing continuous improvement that reduces workload and/or improves quality across the team. Act as a champion for embracing emerging technologies, including Gen AI, and think innovatively about ways to incorporate into process improvement initiatives.
  • Act as the LOB and functional area liaison for new products and initiatives and lead those projects as they relate to Statutory.
  • Lead the Stat Team system and data coordination.
  • Implement new accounting / reporting guidance and integrate into current processes. 
  • Develop new analysis of statutory income, surplus and STAT to GAAP reconciliations.
  • Work closely with staff to further streamline the annual Schedule P and RBC processes.
  • Work with staff to manage the onshore and offshore state compliance activities; including the Master Checklist, Department of Insurance, Rating Agency filings and identify opportunities to streamline these processes.
  • Oversee staff production of quarterly footnote and general interrogatory disclosures for the NAIC Statements, NAIC Combined P&C and the P&C and HLA Audits.
  • Maintain SOX controls and implement new financial controls.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in a professional finance or accounting role with STAT reporting responsibilities at a mid-to-large size insurance company required. Property & Casualty experience strongly preferred.  GAAP and/or Life STAT financial reporting experience in addition to P&C is desirable. 
  • Proven leadership skills required; experience managing staff strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline required.
  • CPA, MBA preferred but not required.  
  • Experience with Statutory Reporting Software platforms.
  • Willingness to be flexible and able to successfully balance multiple competing priorities.
  • Proactive individual with well-developed communication, analytical and documentation skills.
  • Strong desire to continuously evaluate current processes and identify/implement process improvements.
  • Proficiency in Excel, PeopleSoft General Ledger, TM1 or similar software required.
  • Demonstrated track record of career growth.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$126,400 - $189,600
