Engineering Manager

• Managing a cross functional delivery team of analysts, engineers, SREs and being able to work with them to solve their problems and unblock the path to delivery 

• Set & manage the running of the team on a day-to-day basis from standups, planning, people manage, recruitment and other activities to ensure smooth running of the team 

• Driving the delivery of the components from beginning all the way through to production in a practical/timely manner and involving all the key stakeholders along the way.  You will be responsible for making sure that communication channels are open all the way through. 

• Managing the operations and production support of the services provided by the team 

• Driving high engineering standards from your own hands on experience, including performance, reliability, availability, observability approaches.  Be able to define clear SLOs & SLAs and report on performance and ensure great quality of the applications being released 

• Working with architecture, engineers & other engineering managers from multiple departments and platforms as well as reliability, infrastructure and product to run workshops to ensure what we build best meets the need of our customers and integration points are as smooth as possible 

• Contributing to the alignment with Global Streaming Technology Standards 

• Working with the following tech stack: Java, Kubernetes | Docker, Postgres (relational databases) | Kafka. We expect fully automated CI/CD Pipelines all the way through to production, fully automated functional and non-functional tests all the way. 

What skills do you need to play your role well? 

• Experience working on backend platform technologies 

• Experience driving the delivery of projects/programmes as well as operations/production support in the team 

• Demonstrated ability to deliver with exceptional engineering practices 

• Experience running services with JVM Based Languages, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, Relational Databases & other persistence technology (eg Kafka) 

• Coding Best practices/standards, TDD, BDD 

• Implementing CI/CD without manual human interventions, fully rolling non disruptive automated production deployments, fully automated functional and non-functional testing 

• Understanding the benefits and disadvantages of microservices architecture.  This includes experience effectively building and ensuring the implementation of tooling required to ensure high availability and reliability 

• Understanding of the non-functional aspects of delivery and operations (scale, reliability, observability) and what is required to maintain standards 

• Applied knowledge of lean methodologies and how to use the best approaches to deliver our goals eg scrum, kanban, iterative delivery, continuous improvement 

• Excellent communication skills, being able to convey ideas clearly with a wide range of technical and non-technical stakeholders as well as being able to help with direction and problems of the engineers and SREs within the team 

• Experience practical daily problem solving within a team, encouraging innovative ideas whilst negotiating practicalities to keep the team moving to deliver as effectively as possible 

• Experience with People Management, actively demonstrating ability to foster a harmonious atmosphere within the team, setting goals for the team & individuals and providing regular reviews and feedback
