Underwriter - Accident and Health

This Underwriter role will be an ideal next step in your career if you already have some relevant experience in insurance – or this could be your entry into underwriting if you have transferable skills.

How you will create an impact

Financial / Business Development

  • Responsible for achievement of top and bottom-line results for new and renewal business.
  • Deliver on underwriting profit results with focus on profitability, loss ratio and combined ratio.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external business partners to drive healthy organic growth of business.
  • Collaborate and cross-sell with other internal stakeholders and lines of business within AIG.


Underwriting / Portfolio Management

  • Underwriting new and renewal Accident & Health accounts (including Business Travel, Participant Accident, Participant Travel, Supplemental Health) within an assigned territory (manual and experience rating)
  • Analyze, select, and price risks, and have the ability to articulate underwriting analyses and identify corrective actions, if any, to sales team and broker contacts
  • Achieve new business premium targets, account and premium retention targets and loss ratio targets for assigned territory
  • Strategize with other members of assigned territory team to identify target market segments and to develop broker distribution relationships
  • Servicing of assigned accounts and brokers, in conjunction with other Underwriting, Sales and Account Management team members within assigned territory.
  • Work closely with other functional area, such as Claims, Actuarial, Operations, Finance, Legal and Compliance
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to ensure awareness of underwriting activities that require support and service.
  • Deliver timely and accurate quotes/binders.
  • Assist in achieving overall GPW goal in collaboration with Distribution. Work closely and share responsibility for overall revenue goal through new business and retention targets.
  • Quarterly self-audit process to assure 100% and timely compliance and take necessary actions on audit recommendations and findings.
  • Adherence to all internal and external compliance standards, including implementation of new standards.
  • Training to ensure compliance to underwriting authority and sales practice  

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

Educational Qualifications

  • University degree or higher and / or equivalent experience in Accident and Health or other insurance business.

Professional and Technical Skills and Experience

  • Strong customer service ethic, with a sound understanding of the business processes.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills – both written and oral.
  • Excellent planning and negotiation skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to set strategic direction.
  • Able to work in a team to lead and contribute so that AIG meets its strategic goals.
  • Strong preference for proven Accident and Health product knowledge and technical underwriting skills.

For positions based in California, the base salary range is $76,000 - $95,000. In addition, the position is eligible for a bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable incentive plan.
