The K-Pg Research Assistant (Term) provides technical support to the Department of Earth Sciences (DES) labs and collections. This position is responsible for the proper stabilization, preparation, and housing of K/Pg vertebrate fossils collected from the Rocky Mountain West. Additionally, this individual will work closely with collections staff and DES curators to assist with photographing, identifying, and databasing fossil vertebrates and plants. She/he/they will provide scientific expertise in paleontology and geology to support DMNS efforts to deliver world-class research, curation, and outreach.

This is a 15-month, term position.

Job Class: Three-quarter Time (32 hours/week)
Hiring Range: $21.13 - $25.00/hour
Work Schedule: 4 days per week; M-Th or Tues-Fri

Essential Duties

  • Stabilize, repair, and house vertebrate fossils for long-term storage in the DES collections.
  • Practicprofessional preparation as directed by the lab staff in consultation with the DES curators; create research-quality molds and casts
  • Photograph, digitize, and catalog fossil vertebrates and plants; surface scan and generate 3D digital models of fossils.
  • Support field work logistics; participate in regional field efforts; assist with camp dynamics and field camp management.
  • Participate in and facilitate public engagement events, e.g., Science on the Spot, summer camp experiences, Museum Member Nights, Educator Open Houses, etc.; create social media content
  • Continually work to integrate the DES labs and collections with the Prehistoric Journey exhibit to increase the visitor experience.
  • Work collaboratively with other lab staff, interns, curators, collections staff, and external partners.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a focus in geosciences, Earth sciences, biological sciences, or related field.   
  • Occasional local travel and out of state travel. 
  • Must obtain a Colorado driver's license within 30 days of hire.

Ideal Candidate Will Be/Have

  • Previous experience in fossil preparation and paleontology field work.
  • Positive attitude; ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, patience, and fine motor skills; excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with museum staff and volunteers.
  • Organized; ability to self-start and maintain balance between a number of projects.
  • Previous experience using equipment and software to create 3D digital models.
