Overview

Reporting to the Trader (Northeast) and working within SmartestEnergy’s (SEUS) Wholesale Group, the principal role of the Sales Trader (Northeast) is to:

  • Optimize hedging transactions within the trading strategy provided by the Head of Trading and Trader.
  • Maintain dynamic knowledge of SEUS counterparties pricing strengths and contracting behaviour to improve hedging efficiency by using bilateral counterparties.
  • Create value for the Head of Trading and Trader by reducing cash collateral usage and savings on brokerage.
  • Provide price feedback to the Head of Trading and Trader to incrementally improve SEUS price curves.
  • Provide desk cover for the Trader

The Sales Trader is a risk management role that operates with guidance and mentorship provided by the Trader and within an amount of risk collateral as allocated by the Head of Trading.

In this role, you will be involved with the following:

  • Maintain frequent dialogue with bilateral trading counterparties which supports a dynamically updated view of transaction prices available hedging bilaterally.
  • Support the Trader and Head of Trading in use of cash efficiency by optimizing transactions placed via exchanges vs. bilateral counterparts.
  • Contribute towards the annual Northeast Trading P&L targets through the effective bilateral hedging transactions.
  • Comply with SEUS Risk Limits and Transaction Control Procedures, in addition to operating at all times within the risk mandate delegated by the Head of Trading.
  • Work with Head of Origination to progress transactions and provide live market pricing.
  • Ensure accurate and timely capture of wholesale market transactions in SEUS’s ETRM system.
  • Provide stewardship of trader positions during their absence.
  • Maintain high standard of professionalism while dealing with external counterparties.
  • Liaise with Risk department for P&L reconciliation.
  • Support the wider business with comments on general market conditions, including the production of a daily market summary.
  • Support the Trader and Head of Trading with ad hoc tasks as necessary from time to time.

To be successful in this role, you are likely to have the following skills/experience:

  • 2-5 years in energy or commodity markets in a wholesale markets role
  • Experience transacting or procuring wholesale market products and/or energy retail hedging is preferred.
  • Additional experience in the broader commodity retail, trading analytics, ETRM trade capture and market risk methods desired.
  • Understanding of commodity market participants and their wholesale market requirements
  • Working knowledge of Excel and VBA
  • Strong communicator, able to clearly and concisely articulate under pressure
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent at building and maintaining relationships and balance conflicting viewpoints
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with wide range of customers and partners
  • Problem solving skills/logical thinking and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and respond to urgent deadlines
