About the Job:  

We are currently looking to hire an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist

The role is on-site Monday through Friday at our Salt Lake City facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Be physically present in the plant facility by walking the floor and assist employees with questions/concerns 
  • Assist and help lead the Lockout Tagout/Line Break program at the plant 
  • Assist in maintaining the Forklift (PIV) Program via Crown InfoLink and serve as a “Train-the-Trainer” to certify employees on various forklift (PIV) equipment within the facility.  
  • Assist and maintain the site’s focus and goal on ZWTL (Zero Waste to Landfill) initiatives 
  • Assist and help maintain the site’s PSM (Process Safety Management) Ammonia compliance with assistance from ammonia contractor and outside consultants  
  • Be able to lead/conduct trainings sessions amongst your peers in group settings of ~30+ employees 
  • Participate in EHS compliance and management system inspections requiring paper documentation and/or use of iPads to document compliance inspections 
  • Supports the Plant Director or Plant EHS Manager in the development of EHS policies, standards and procedures based on regulatory and internal requirements 
  • Support improvements in safety, environmental and sustainability culture/performance 
  • Manage data collection and analysis of EHS metrics and reports including; injury and illness, near-misses, concern reports, air, waste, energy and water data using Benchmark Gensuite software suite 
  • Serve as the Plant Administrator/Champion of Benchmark Gensuite (Action Tracker, Compliance Calendar, Concern Reporting, Inspection Tool, Incidents & Measurements, Training Tracker and Sustainability Reporting) and other data management systems (SmartSheets, etc.) 
  • Assist with preparation of environmental government reports and permits/certifications 
  • Assist in safety committee team(s) and safety awareness programs 
  • Conduct and mentor employees in behavior based safety (BBS) observations/conservations  
  • Assist with emergency response & evacuation planning  
  • Participate in job safety analysis, document risk assessments and create/update safety policies and procedures 
  • Research safety and environmental regulations and provide support for compliance 
  • Assist in creation and delivery of EHS training programs (classroom style)  
  • Assist with management of EHS recordkeeping 
  • Lead creation and deployment of site level EHS communications 
  • Support Workers Compensation claims and work with case managers on claim management and plan of action 
  • Be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people. Is frequently called upon to handle difficult situations. 
  • Be able to deal with a variety of emotions and frustrations in making business decisions.  Emotional stability and personal maturity are important attributes in this position.  
  • Be able to analyze many variables and choose the most effective course of action for the organization at any given point in time. 
  • Handle novel and diverse work problems on a daily basis. 
  • Be able to communicate and provide verbal feedback in a professional manner. 
  • Be able to resolve problems, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.  Requires public contact and excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Escalates issues in a timely manner to team members, support personnel and plant leadership. 
  • Comply with all regulations, policies, and procedures 
  • All other duties as assigned or become evident 

 

PREFERRED CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Health and Safety, Chemistry, Engineering or related field preferred
  • Be knowledgeable with OSHA, EPA and UDEQ regulations
  • Minimum 1 year experiencing in manufacturing environment

Work Environment:  

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a general office environment where the noise level is usually moderate.

Physical Demands:  

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs, balance; stoop, kneel or crouch; talk and hear. 
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Climbing and bending during walkthroughs of the plant.
  • Some prolonged sitting and bending from office work.
  • Normal range of hearing and vision to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports.
  • Some exposure to moving parts and machines, chemicals, and slippery environments.
  • Working under stressful conditions or occasionally working irregular hours.
  • Some exposures to extreme temperatures.
  • Some donning of personal protective equipment.
