JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary
CNS is seeking highly qualified Corrosion Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to study independent scientific review of the draft technical Corrosion Mitigation for Buried Metallic Water Pipe. The goal of this review is to provide expert insight and recommendations to help guide corrosion prevention strategies for critical water infrastructure projects.
Essential Functions

This position will perform the following key responsibilities:
Participate in a virtual kickoff meeting with staff to review the project scope and materials
Conduct an independent scientific review of documents against current corrosion control industry standards
Evaluate the technical soundness of soil corrosivity criteria, projected pipe service life, and life cycle cost estimates
Consider public comments as part of the review process
Contribute findings to a consolidated report, including responses to specific review questions and expert recommendations
Ensure that all review comments are clear, scientifically grounded, and consistent with industry best practices
Required Education and Experience
Contractor Requirements
Minimum of five years' experience managing independent technical or scientific reviews
Proven completion of at least three similar engineering or science review projects
Demonstrated ability to manage technical review teams and deliver consolidated findings
Subject Matter Expert (SME) Requirements
Each SME must have:
A minimum of 25 years of professional engineering experience
A degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program
Deep knowledge of corrosion standards (e.g., NACE SP0169)
Recent and direct experience in corrosion control for buried metallic water pipe systems
Professional experience in water infrastructure applications
Each SME must hold at least one of the following credentials:
A current Professional Engineering (P.E.) license
A Ph.D. in engineering
NACE Cathodic Protection Specialist (CP4) certification
SMEs will be selected from the following categories:
Category 1: Water utility representative with at least 15 years of corrosion control experience
Category 2: Consultant with at least 15 years of corrosion control design experience
Category 3: Academic professor with at least 15 years of corrosion science experience
Work Environment
This job is conducted remotely. The role requires computer access and the ability to review technical documents and digital materials.
Physical Demands
The physical demands are minimal and typical of remote or office-based professional work. Employees must be able to read, analyze, and provide detailed written feedback on complex engineering content.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time, contract position. Work hours are flexible, with deliverables due according to project timelines established at contract start.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired must verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States. A non-disclosure agreement (NDA) is required due to the sensitivity of materials.
