Job description

UI/UX Engineer

Working with our business partners to create, improve and sustain industry and infrastructure.  Orbital Engineering has been driven by this core purpose for more than 50 years - energizing Orbital team members and helping our clients solve challenging and complex problems with innovative engineering, inspection, and construction solutions.  Orbital team members are guided by the fundamental beliefs of building trusted relationships, personal accountability, innovation, and excellence in everything we do.  Orbital is looking for others to join our team to continue activating our purpose and embrace our values.

Orbital Engineering is seeking a highly skilled UI/UX Engineer to drive the design and development of user interfaces for Orbital’s custom software platforms and other software applications. These platforms support a wide range of operational, field, and project management workflows across the company. This is a fully remote position within the United States.

This role combines user-centered design expertise with front-end development capabilities. The ideal candidate will have experience building intuitive, efficient, and maintainable interfaces for business and technical users in environments where clarity, consistency, and usability are critical.

Key Responsibilities:
• Design and develop responsive, user-friendly interfaces for internal and client-facing web applications.
• Translate business needs and functional requirements into intuitive UI/UX solutions through wireframes, mockups, and code.
• Develop and maintain reusable front-end components using modern frameworks (primarily React), as well as legacy jQuery.
• Conduct user research and usability testing with internal stakeholders to guide iterative improvements.
• Collaborate with software engineers, product managers, and internal end users to align designs with business workflows and system capabilities.
• Maintain and evolve internal design systems and pattern libraries to ensure consistent experience across platforms.
• Apply responsive design and accessibility (WCAG standards) best practices to interfaces used by field and office personnel across various devices.
• Contribute documentation and knowledge sharing around UI/UX standards, component usage, and front-end best practices.
• Participate in agile development processes and contribute to the refinement of UI/UX-related stories and tasks.

Education & Experience:
• Bachelor's/Master's/Ph.D. in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 3+ years of experience designing and building user interfaces for internal business tools, custom web applications, or operational platforms.
Skills & Competencies:
• Proficiency in front-end development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue, along with familiarity working with jQuery in legacy contexts.
• Strong understanding of UI/UX design principles, user flows, interaction design, and information architecture.
• Experience with modern design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or equivalent.
• Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git or BitBucket), API integration, and agile collaboration tools like Jira or Azure DevOps.
• Demonstrated ability to create, manage, and evolve component-based design systems in partnership with development teams.
• Knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and responsive design across web and mobile interfaces.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to self-manage projects and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
• Fluent in English and comfortable presenting design concepts and code implementations to business leaders and cross-functional teams.
