Job Summary

The Senior Manager of Tax Compliance is responsible for managing the company’s day-to-day tax compliance activities, including overseeing the relationship with our external tax preparers and directly handling state and local tax filings such as Gross Receipts, Personal Property, and Sales & Use Tax. This role ensures timely and accurate filings across multiple entities and jurisdictions, maintains a clean audit trail, and helps identify opportunities to improve compliance processes. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment.

What You Will Do (Functions and Responsibilities)

  • Manage the relationship with external tax preparers, including coordination of deliverables, tracking deadlines, and reviewing filings for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare, file, and remit Gross Receipts, Personal Property, and Sales & Use Tax returns in applicable jurisdictions, ensuring full compliance with local regulations.
  • Maintain and monitor the tax calendar to ensure all filing obligations and payment deadlines are met across multiple entities and states.
  • Respond to tax notices and information requests from taxing authorities; escalate issues to external advisors as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and organized documentation to support all tax filings and audits.
  • Perform nexus reviews and monitor registration requirements for new and existing jurisdictions.
  • Partner with Accounting to ensure correct tax treatment of transactions in the GL and alignment with external tax reporting.
  • Support system improvements and process documentation for tax workflows; identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and increase efficiency.
  • Assist with sales tax system maintenance (e.g., Avalara or other provider), including exemption certificate tracking, rate updates, and jurisdictional changes.
  • Stay informed of changes in state and local tax laws; raise potential impacts to internal stakeholders.
Qualifications

What We are Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)

  • 5-7+ years of relevant tax experience, preferably in a multi-entity corporate environment or public accounting firm.
  • Experience working with external tax preparers or managing outsourced tax compliance processes.
  • Hands-on experience preparing and filing Gross Receipts, Personal Property, and Sales & Use Tax returns.
  • Strong understanding of state and local tax (SALT) regulations and filing requirements.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tax calendars and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in Excel; familiarity with tax platforms such as Avalara, Thomson Reuters, or Vertex a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate across internal teams and external advisors.
  • High attention to detail, strong documentation habits, and a mindset for process improvement.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Active CPA license preferred.
