Dialysis Technician III (Preceptor)

Summary/Objective

 

Reporting to the Regional Manager, the Dialysis Technician III functions as part of the hemodialysis health care team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients. As a certified Preceptor, the Dialysis Technician III provides training to new Concerto teammates and works under the supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with Concerto’s policies, procedures, and training and in compliance with regulations set for by state and federal agencies.

 

The Dialysis Technician III demonstrates exemplary patient care practices, including patient observations, treatment initiation and termination, and infection control procedures.

 

Essential Functions

 

Preceptor Duties

  • The Dialysis Technician III Preceptor is responsible for providing hands-on training and mentorship of the new and existing dialysis technicians, collaborating with the charge nurse and clinical education to ensure trainees are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to provide safe, efficient, and effective dialysis care.
  • Works closely with clinical education to maintain the highest standards of patient care and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Observes and instructs trainees during clinical practice, ensuring adherence to established protocols and safety standards.
  • Communicates effectively with trainees, providing clear instructions and support.
  • Collaborates with charge nurse and clinical education to evaluate trainees’ progress and competencies, documenting performance metrics and identifying opportunities for further development.
  • Ensures that all training activities comply with Concerto policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains accurate training records and documentation, in accordance with Company policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Attends all preceptor training.
  • Leads by example, consistently adhering to Concerto’s policies and procedures.

 

Dialysis Technician Duties

  • Provides direct patient care for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Provides excellent customer services to all external and internal customers, patients/families, co-workers, physicians, and long-term care staff.
  • Creates welcoming environment for patients, monitoring their wellbeing from treatment to treatment and reporting any complaints or observations to Charge RN.
  • Obtains pre and post treatment vitals, weight and vascular access assessment. Reports any unusual changes or findings to the nurse.
  • Performs vascular access evaluation pre-treatment, as well as vascular access cannulation and reports unusual findings to Charge RN.
  • Responsible for the setup, operation and performing safety checks of hemodialysis machines. Performs all required pretreatment dialysis machine testing and documentation; responsible for ensuring appropriate dialysis machine safety alarms are enabled.
  • Initiates and discontinue dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders and policy.
  • Performs heparin administration as permitted by state law.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including vital signs, treatment parameters, and change in condition.
  • Responsible for calculating and entry of individual patients’ dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal; treatment time; and UF modeling as prescribed. 
  • Initiates dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD). Monitors patients’ response to dialysis therapy and report any unusual findings to Charge RN. 
  • Records accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters onto the Hemodialysis Flowsheet. Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to patient care. 
  • Evaluates patient prior to termination of venous access, including standing and sitting blood pressure. Obtains hemostasis and applies appropriate dressings. 
  • Evaluates patients prior to discharge and report any unusual findings to Charge RN. 
  • Collects, labels, appropriately prepares and stores lab samples according to required laboratory specifications. Ensures collection of lab specimens by appropriate lab courier. 
  • Maintains environmental integrity and aesthetics - ensures all areas are safe and clean. Cleans and disinfects dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments according to facility policy. 
  • Prepares, organizes, and efficiently utilizes supplies and equipment to prevent wastage. 
  • Assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
  • Obtains and prepares laboratory specimens as prescribed.
  • Complies with federal and state regulations of the practice of hemodialysis patient care technicians.

  • Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification (NNCC, BONENT)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid CPR Certification.
  • Able to meet physical demands of the position.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of dialysis technician experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working for Concerto as a Dialysis Technician.

Physical Demands

The physical demands and work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Must meet the necessary requirements of Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
  • This position requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing and the employee must be able to bend over. The employee may occasionally be required to move, with assistance, machines and equipment of up to 200 lbs., and may lift chemical and water solutions of up to 30 lbs. up as high as 5 feet.
  • Requires mental, visual, and auditory attention.
  • The work environment is characteristic of a health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials.
