Role Overview
To effectively and accurately review and evaluate information regarding mortgage loan documentation to determine if the borrower and/or property meet loan standards. Someone who believes in superior customer service and enjoys working in a high production team environment where integrity and honesty is paramount. Candidates should be prepared for a high-pressure environment that may require extended hours, including evenings and weekends, particularly during peak periods (example but not limited to: end of month, spring/summer). Success in this role demands strong time management, resilience under stress, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results under demanding timelines. What distinguishes MSF from other lenders is our commitment to supporting borrowers who may have been declined elsewhere, often due to low credit scores. To ensure these individuals still have access to the opportunity of homeownership, we manually underwrite approximately 70% of our loans.
Essential Duties: In addition to related job duties as assigned, this position will:
Complete a thorough analysis of loan files to determine compliance with company, investor, and government guidelines and standards
Evaluate the entire credit package and collateral for residential mortgage loans and ultimately ensure an "investor" quality loan product
Provide superior customer service to internal and external customers
Communicate decision (approval, suspense, denial) on loans to appropriate parties both verbally and in writing.
Be available to processors and loan officers for general guideline interpretations and questions on specific loan files
Continually exhibit an understanding of automated underwriting and guidelines
Check accuracy of all calculations
Meet or exceed productions goals while maintaining quality requirements
Perform other duties as assigned
Maintain regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
Work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, to ensure timely loan closings and meet Service Level Agreements.
Demonstrate resilience and adaptability while navigating tight deadlines and a high-pressure work environment while consistently managing a demanding workload.
Qualifications, Experience & Knowledge
Senior level Underwriter with a minimum 5 years’ experience underwriting DPA products and manually approved government loans
Extensive experience underwriting VA and FHA, USDA experience also preferred
DE, LAPP and SAR certifications required
Knowledgeable in investor overlay and researching such guidelines
Excellent appraisal analysis skills
Knowledge of current HUD and investor guidelines
Must be able to prioritize files throughout the day to accommodate CTC files
Handle exception items/files and resolve complex issues
Experience and complete knowledge of FHA/VA lending guidelines preferred
Understands how FHA/VA guidelines relate to internal and investor guidelines preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Physical Requirements
Occasional movement about inside the office to access files, walk to offices, or utilize office machinery (e.g., printer, scanner).
Occasional lifting and carrying of lightweight items, such as file boxes or office supplies, up to 10 pounds. This may involve bending, pushing, pulling, or twisting as necessary.
This role requires remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods (e.g., at a desk, working on a computer).
Requires consistent visual focus and mental concentration for extended durations to review complex loan documentation, analyze data, and perform detailed manual underwriting. This includes the ability to discern fine print and details on electronic and paper documents.
Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and operating standard office equipment (e.g., computer, keyboard, mouse, phone).
Ability to frequently communicate verbally and in writing, both in person and over the phone, with internal and external parties. This requires clear articulation and the ability to listen and comprehend information accurately, even under pressure.
Maintaining mental stamina and focus for extended periods, including during peak production times and when working extended hours. The ability to concentrate and make critical decisions accurately, even when fatigued, is paramount.
The ability to maintain physical and mental composure in a high-stress, fast-paced environment with demanding deadlines.
While not a direct physical requirement, the role demands significant mental resilience, which impacts physical well-being. The ability to manage stress effectively to prevent its physical manifestations (e.g., fatigue, headaches, reduced concentration) is critical for sustained performance.
