Job Description
We are seeking energetic and motivated individuals to join as Senior Director, Permitting in our Development department. The Senior Director will lead all permitting strategy and execution across our BESS development pipeline, from early-stage site selection through construction. This role requires deep knowledge of permitting processes at the federal, state, and local levels, a strong track record of stakeholder engagement, and the ability to proactively manage risk in a fast-paced, evolving regulatory landscape.


The successful candidate will bring a blend of strategic leadership, technical expertise, and operational discipline to support the company’s mission of accelerating clean energy deployment.

Key Responsibilities
Permitting Strategy & Execution
  • Lead the permitting strategy for BESS projects across multiple markets.
  • Develop and implement permitting timelines, ensuring alignment with project milestones.
  • Coordinate permitting requirements across environmental, land use, interconnection, and construction phases.
Team Leadership
  • Manage and grow a team of permitting professionals and consultants.
  • Provide mentorship and ensure knowledge transfer and consistency across projects.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Lead interactions with permitting agencies, local jurisdictions, and community stakeholders.
  • Represent the company in public meetings, hearings, and regulatory proceedings as needed.
Cross-functional Collaboration
  • Partner with project development, real estate, legal, engineering and construction teams.
  • Provide permitting risk assessments and mitigation strategies to internal stakeholders.
Regulatory Compliance & Policy Monitoring
  • Stay ahead of evolving permitting and environmental regulations affecting BESS development.
  • Provide guidance on regulatory changes and advise executive leadership on strategic implications.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, planning, engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • CAISO permitting experience is strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of permitting experience in renewable energy, utility-scale development, or infrastructure projects.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role managing permitting teams and/or consultants.
  • Deep knowledge of environmental laws (e.g., NEPA, CEQA, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act), zoning, and local permitting processes.
  • Experience with BESS, solar + storage, or utility-scale renewable projects strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills.

Compensation and Benefits
The actual salary and bonus offered will depend on the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate.

 
Salary: $215,000Bonus: 35%

Location
This position is classified as remote; however, periodic travel to company offices, project sites or other meeting locations may be required on an as-needed basis.
