We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer with Air Force Weather experience to join our Engineering team in Omaha, Nebraska to join the AFW (Air Force Weather) Enterprise programs and expand our distinguished team to develop a state-of-the-art network of meteorological data and applications.
The AFW Enterprise software provides a request engine for identifying impacts to mission plans based on authoritative meteorological data. Team members follow Agile development tenants (e.g. Sprints, Scrums, Backlogs) within a DevSecOps cadence toward the deployment of meteorological microservices to Air Force Weather and the Department of Defense.
What You Will Do
Typical responsibilities include supporting the design, coding, test, and integration of software within an agile framework. The qualified candidate will be involved with all phases of the software development life cycle including epic decomposition and story generation, story analysis and estimation, software implementation and unit test, software build and integration, generation of technical documentation, problem detection and resolving discrepancy reports. The qualified candidate will also be responsible for supporting software validation and verification, qualification, configuration control and documentation at the component level.
Additionally, the qualified candidate will be responsible for quickly understanding assignments and carrying them out with moderate supervision. Verbal and written communication skills and problem-solving skills will enable the qualified candidate to successfully support all phases of the development cycle to ensure successful integration with other software components.
Key responsibilities for the qualified candidate include working in an atmosphere of the following technologies: Python and REST Microservices, MongoDB and GraphQL, Kafka, AWS cloud computing to include SNS, SQS, and EC2, Splunk and Prometheus/Grafana for logging and monitoring
Design, develop, and maintain new software functionality
Work with previously written code and make modifications as necessary
Work closely with other Government and/or contractor teams to integrate components and troubleshoot/fix problems
Work in a dynamic, fast paced, and sometimes pressured environment
Contribute to the completion of program and project mile-stones under the specific guidance of his/her immediate supervisor
Follow established SW processes and procedures, development, documentation and maintenance/management of operations concepts, external and internal interfaces, and other software engineering work products/artifacts
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications You Must Have
Typically requires a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering or (STEM) focused Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics and 8 years of prior relevant Software Engineering experience.
Experience developing with Python.
Experience developing microservice applications.
Experience in Air Force Weather operations and the understanding of how technology integrates with Air Force Weather capabilities that drives effectiveness for military forecasters.
Experience leading Scrum team and demonstrating capabilities to Air Force weather customer.
Experience with meteorological and technical information and expressing concerns to management, verbally and in writing.
Experience with DoD Severe Parameter Impact Request Engine (SPIRE) application.
A current U.S. government issued SECRET security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer
Experience with GALWEM weather model.
Experience using Python programming language as a microservice in an Agile environment to include experience with the following technologies: MongoDB, GraphQL, Kafka, AWS, SNS, SQS, EC2, Splunk, Prometheus/Grafana
Experience with Cloud Services in a Commercial Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) or Platform as Service (PAAS) environment.
Prefer an Active and transferable U.S. government issued Secret security clearance prior to start date.

The salary range for this role is 101,000 USD - 203,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
