Kitware, Inc. seeks Senior R&D Engineer—BSS to report to our Carrboro, NC loc and may work remotely from supporting state locations. Work on Interactive Medical Simulation Toolkit (iMSTK) which is an open-source toolkit for medical simulation & other modeling & visualization libraries such as Pulse & VTK. Implement new features, improve performance of existing modules, help w/ execution of funded projects & provide customer support. Perform software development tasks in support of project goals w/ minimal guidance. Participate in research activities. Understand platforms & tech within technical team & contribute to platforms by adding tests; fixing bugs; responding to questions. Work to understand the tech & capabilities (at elevator pitch level) of all technical teams. Lead small-to-medium-sized projects w/ guidance from team principals or leadership. Respond to questions or issues from other teams. Contribute to grant proposal submissions to federal gov’t agencies. Little domestic travel may be involved. May undergo background checks.
Must hold PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Comp Sci, Applied Mathematics, or rel field; and required skills. Alternatively, must hold Masters in Mechanical Engineering, Comp Sci, Applied Mathematics, or rel field and 3 yrs exp in simulation or developing computational methods. Also requires skills in: C++ programming and inner-workings of numerical methods such as finite elements, finite difference and numerical solvers. Required skills can be gained concurrent with education, and skills will be measured through passage of technical screen or interview.
