Job Summary 

Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) works according to legal and ethical guidelines to ensure the correct and safe supply of medical products to Borrego Health patients. The PIC is involved in maintaining and improving people's health by providing advice and information and supplying prescription medicines.  

Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Review weekly timesheets for accuracy, review employee submissions and updates as needed; approve timesheets by required timeline 
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings (monthly at a minimum frequency, preferably bi-weekly), scheduled conversations, and annual performance reviews with direct reports by required timeline 
  • Attend mandatory Manager’s Learning Collaborative trainings 
  • Partner with People Operations to: 
    • Develop a learning plan for employee development goals to provide tools needed to excel in their position 
    • Implement and follow a process to address performance issues as they arise 
    • Prepare a comprehensive onboarding process for each specific position for all new hires 
    • Address serious issues that may require interventions or investigations  
  • Develop and monitor departmental and program/project operating budgets, costs and schedules 
  • Supervise, lead, coach, and use best management practices to improve staff performance 
  • Support and model the identified vision, values, and behaviors of the organization 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities   

  • Dispense prescription medicines to the public, checking dosage and ensure that medicines are correctly and safely supplied and labeled (pharmacists are legally responsible for any dispensing errors) 
  • Supervise the preparation of any medicines (not all are supplied ready made-up by the manufacturer) 
  • Keep a register of controlled drugs for legal and stock control purpose 
  • Collaborate with doctors about prescriptions 
  • Collaborate with affiliated clinic managers and conduct quarterly audits and inspections to ensure compliance with State and Federal drug storage and handling 
  • Assist customers in selecting and purchasing over-the-counter medications 
  • Counsel and advise the public on the treatment of minor ailments and any adverse side-effects of medicines or potential interactions with other medicines and treatments 
  • Prepare doses and cassette boxes, usually for the elderly but also for those with memory, learning difficulties, where tablets are placed in compartments for specified days of the week 
  • Provide specialist health check services, such as measuring and fitting compression hosiery, monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels, diabetes screening and pregnancy testing 
  • Oversee the ordering and safe storage of medical products and, in some cases, arranging the delivery of prescription medicines to patients. 
  • Keep up to date with current pharmacy practice, new drugs and their uses 
  • Maintain computerized records 
  • Manage, supervise and train pharmacy practice, new drugs and their uses 
  • Sell healthcare and other products, such as toiletries, cosmetics and photographic items 
  • Manage pharmacy budget 
  • Promote sales and developing the business 
  • Other duties as assigned 

 

Qualifications

  • Ability to:
    • Apply safety and efficiency in the prescribing, dispensing, administering, and use of drugs and related articles for the prevention of illness and the maintenance and management of health 
    • Fill prescriptions and prepare official drugs and standard medications 
    • Recognize physical, chemical, and therapeutic incompatibilities 
    • Analyze and understand Physicians', Dentists’, or other recognized, medical personnel's oral or written orders involving standard symbols and terminology 
    • Apply pharmaceutical laboratory techniques 
    • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work 
    • Communicate effectively with others 
    • Maintain favorable public relations 

Education and Experience 

  • Must possess a valid license to practice as a pharmacist issued by the State of California Board of Pharmacy 
  • Personal qualities which will permit the PIC to work with the staff and residents of the community in such a manner as to earn their confidence and respect. The PIC should demonstrate concern for the welfare of all people served by Borrego Health 
  • Knowledge of:
    • The principles and practices involved in compounding and dispensing of prescriptions 
    • Pharmacy, drug, narcotic, and related laws of the state 
    • Pharmaceuticals, drugs, narcotics, and poisons 
    • The calculation of doses and the preparation and use of percentage and stock solutions 
    • The basic sciences underlying pharmacy, such as chemistry, biology, and physics 
    • The processes involved in the manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations 
    • Stock control and related record keeping 
  • Current BLS certification obtained through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross 

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements 

  • This position is on-site at a DAP Health Pharmacy location 
  • This job operates in a pharmacy setting and requires frequent times of sitting, standing, repetitive motion and talking. 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
