Description

Job Purpose           

The Medical Assistant is primarily responsible for pre/post-operative patient care and administrative aspects concerning patients.

Job Summary

A meticulous individual with a positive attitude and excellent patient satisfaction skills. Must be an enthusiastic, devoted, team player that is able to thrive in a high-volume clinical setting. Must possess excellent cleanliness and sanitation skills, with a desire and willingness to learn specific treatment offerings. The Medical Assistant will work closely with the Practice Manager, Nurse Manager, Physician and entire team to ensure a positive patient experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ability to prioritize and use time management skills in order to keep appointments within the allotted time.
  • Understands that all care regarding a patient is confidential and privileged information. Maintains patient confidence by protecting this information and adhering to all HIPAA regulations.
  • Performs circulating assistant duties as needed during surgical cases, such as cleaning, helping with room turnover, aiding in patient transport to a gurney, obtaining needed supplies, and assisting medical personnel within their scope of practice.
  • Interviews patients and obtains vital signs, such as respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, and weight/height. Records information in the patient medical record accurately.
  • Prepares exam rooms and pre-op/post-op areas for examination of patients.
  • Calls patients to review surgical instructions and arrival times prior to surgery.
  • Performs additional pre-operative appointment functions, such as taking photos, body measurements, garment fittings, assistance with prescriptions, reviews medical and surgical history, organizes consents, chaperones the physician, and answers patient questions.  
  • Performs additional post-operative follow-up appointment functions, such as dressing changes, drain removal, staple removal, suture removal, etc.
  • Performs VelaShape/VenusLegacy treatments when appropriate, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Properly cares for equipment by cleaning per policy and reporting any issues to management.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of all treatments, products and services provided by Athenix and educates patients as appropriate.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, fully stocked, and well-organized environment according to policies and procedures.
  • Assists the clinical staff and Nurse Manager in maintaining adequate inventory and participating in supply checks.
  • Maintains patient photos in an organized, secure, and labeled manner.
  • Uphold the standards of sanitation and sterilization as directed by law and Athenix policies and procedures.
  • Acknowledges and greet patients in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Checks-in patients before surgery, obtains signatures on documents, and coordinates with caregivers for pick-up protocol.
  • Performs point-of-care testing per policies and procedures that include pregnancy, nicotine/drug, hemocue and glucose testing.
  • Assists with collecting specimens and coordinating pick up by the laboratory.
  • Handle patients questions and concerns professionally and courteously, or politely direct to the appropriate personnel if necessary.
  • Provide accurate and appropriate responses to patient requests with the goal of ensuring complete patient satisfaction.
  • Perform accurate and detailed documentation in patient charts after any communication or tasks performed.
  • Assist the physician and nurses with injectables.
  • Adheres to the Narcotic policies, including access to the locked area, providing medications to appropriate personnel, witnessing wastage, accurate counting and documentation in the log with supervision when allowed by the facility’s state regulatory boards and after appropriate training.
  • Coordinates with patients regarding requested labs, tests, and clearances to ensure the patient is ready for surgery. Alerts the physician and/or anesthetist to any abnormal labs or tests.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and contributes toward a quality work environment.
  • Regularly attends and actively participates in staff meetings and trainings for the facility.
  • Supports the needs of the facility by being flexible with schedule.
  • Maintains efficient flow of patients on clinic days and appropriately directs physicians on who they need to see next.
  • Assists with front desk and administrative duties as requested by management.
  • Promptly communicates any complaints or occurrences involving staff or guests that require attention to management.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Certified Medical Assistant in the state where employed and/or Medical Assistant training
  • Basic Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association
  • Minimum of High School Diploma
