Senior Manager, Financial Accounting- Revenue & Grant 


Our Mission

Position Details    

The Senior Manager, Financial Accounting – Revenue and Grant will be based out of a home office located anywhere within the contiguous United States (Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern time zones) or United States territories that fall within the Atlantic time zone.  

 

Position Overview 

The Senior Manager, Financial Accounting – Revenue and Grant (Senior Manager) executes New Leaders’ financial operations, with specialized focuses on higher education program accounting, investment management, and financial reporting. This position requires a detail-oriented professional who can maintain accurate financial records, produce timely reports, and support strategic financial decision-making. The Senior Manager will combine technical accounting expertise with strong analytical and collaborative skills. 

 

The Senior Manager, Financial Accounting – Revenue and Grant reports to the Senior Executive Director, Finance. 

 

Specific Responsibilities 

Higher Education Program Accounting 

  • Manage, track, and reconcile all financial entries related to higher-education programs
  • Process related payments, institutional reimbursements, and related disbursements
  • Monitor related fund balances, expenditures against budgets, and related monthly reports
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations for related programs
  • Work cross functionally to ensure accurate and timely student data

Revenue Accounting 

  • Execute invoicing and billing processes related to professional services
  • Track payments, manage accounts receivables, and update Finance and other teams accordingly
  • Make necessary journal entries related to entire revenue cycle, manage processes accordingly
  • Interpret contracts and apply GAAP to ensure revenue is recognized accurately and in compliance with accounting standards
  • Ensure accurate and timely tracking of all grant funding, ensuring compliance with grant agreements and GAAP accounting.

Investment Accounting 

  • Record and monitor investment transactions, including purchases, sales, and income
  • Track investment performance and prepare related financial reports
  • Reconcile investment accounts and coordinate with external investment managers
  • Ensure proper accounting treatment for various investment vehicles and financial instruments

Financial Reporting & Analysis 

  • Prepare various month-end financial statements and reports
  • Prepare necessary financial information for all grant funds and/or reports; track and collaborate with appropriate team members across the organization on grant and other financial reporting
  • Collaborate with the rest of the finance team to produce comprehensive month-end reporting packages
  • Conduct ad hoc financial analyses to support organizational decision-making
  • Assist with annual budget development and ongoing budget monitoring

Month-End & Year-End Close Processes 

  • Execute month-end closing procedures for assigned accounting areas
  • Prepare and post journal entries in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
  • Perform account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies
  • Document processes and maintain supporting schedules for audit purposes

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Support the annual audit process by preparing documentation and responding to inquiries
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives within the finance department
  • Stay current with nonprofit accounting standards and best practices
  • Communicate effectively with the Senior Executive Director, Finance and Chief Financial Officer on the status of the Senior Manager’s responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with other New Leaders staff members to ensure timely and accurate work products

 

Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Executive Director, Finance or Chief Financial Officer.  


Qualifications and Competencies 

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • Professional Experience: 
    • Minimum of 5 years of overall professional experience required
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of general ledger and accounting experience
  • Team-Driven: Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals across a variety of backgrounds and experiences; must be results-driven while maintaining a collaborative and inclusive leadership style
  • Mission Alignment: Passionate belief in academic excellence for every student, aligned with New Leaders' mission
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel required; BlackBaud FinancialEdge, and Concur Expense experience a plus
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • CPA certification or progress toward certification preferred
  • Knowledge of fund accounting principles preferred
  • Experience with financial reporting for educational institutions or grant-making organizations preferred
  • Understanding of investment accounting and financial instruments preferred
  • Travel may be required on occasion aligned to New Leaders’ Travel and In-Person Activities policy.
  • New Leaders requires each employee to be fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccination (i.e., at least two weeks have passed since the employee received the dose of a single-dose vaccine or the second dose of a two-dose vaccine with at least the minimum recommended interval between doses) or to obtain an approved exemption or reasonable accommodation through the Human Resources team within six weeks of their start date as a term and condition of employment.       

 

Physical Requirements 

The employee's routine activities involve sitting, talking, hearing, and using hands for tasks like typing, filing, and handling objects. Visual acuity is necessary for keyboard use, data analysis, transcribing, computer terminal viewing, and extensive reading. The role may involve ordinary ambulatory skills for visits to other locations or the ability to perform activities like standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and moving light-weight items. Proficiency in hand-eye coordination, along with dexterity in arms, hands, and fingers for tasks like grasping, operating standard office equipment, and learning technical information, is essential.  

 

What We Offer 

  • Salary Range External: $73,000-$82,000

Note: Salaries vary based on geographical location. After applying, candidates who move forward in the hiring process are provided with a salary for their geographical location.
