About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Bookkeeper with strong expertise in using Zoho Books to support their financial operations. As a key member of their finance team, you will manage day-to-day bookkeeping tasks, maintain accurate financial records, and ensure compliance with accounting standards. This role also includes responsibilities for managing accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, VAT and CIS returns, and monthly reporting.

You will play a vital role in optimising their use of the Zoho platform – maintaining and customising workflows in Zoho Creator, generating reports in Zoho Analytics, and ensuring Zoho Books is fully utilised to support the specific needs of a subcontractor or construction-related business (e.g., CIS, project cost tracking, subcontractor payments).



Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Bookkeeping & Financial Management

  • Maintain accurate books across all ledgers (sales, purchases, bank, journals) in Zoho Books, using Creator to calculate works done.

  • Perform regular bank reconciliations and ensure timely month-end close.

  • Process supplier invoices, match to POs/delivery notes, and process payment runs.

  • Manage accounts receivable, overdue payments, and credit control.

  • Prepare and submit VAT and CIS returns, ensuring compliance with Making Tax Digital.

  • Support payroll input and reconciliation.

  • Assist in year-end preparations and liaise with external accountants.

Construction-Specific Financial Tasks

  • Manage CIS deductions and submissions.

  • Track job/project-level costs accurately for margin analysis.

  • Record retentions and variations appropriately.

  • Liaise with project teams to capture site costs and purchase orders in real time.

Zoho Platform Administration & Customisation

  • Optimise the use of Zoho Books, including workflow automation, templates, and integrations.

  • Customise Zoho Creator apps and forms to support operational processes (e.g., timesheets, purchase requests, job tracking).

  • Build and maintain dashboards and reports (e.g., cash flow, aged debtors, project profitability, WIP reporting) in Zoho Analytics.

  • Train staff and maintain documentation for Zoho systems use.

Additional Duties

  • Record and reconcile financial transactions accurately using Zoho Books.

  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, including issuing invoices and tracking payments.

  • Prepare and process expense reports and bank reconciliations.

  • Maintain up-to-date records of financial data and ensure data integrity.

  • Collaborate with team members to ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Provide financial reports and summaries as required.

  • Assist with budget tracking and financial forecasting.

  • Respond to financial queries and provide support for audits.

  • Maintain compliance with company policies and relevant accounting regulations.


Requirements

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven bookkeeping experience, ideally within a subcontractor or construction-focused business.

  • Expert-level proficiency with Zoho Books.

  • Highly proficient in Zoho Creator (custom apps, forms, workflows, and scripts).

  • Skilled in Zoho Analytics (custom reports, dashboards, and data sources).

  • Deep understanding of CIS and construction financial processes.

  • Solid grasp of VAT, double-entry bookkeeping, and financial compliance.

  • Proficient in Excel/Google Sheets.

  • High attention to detail, well-organised, and deadline-driven.

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices.

  • Ability to work independently and remotely with minimal supervision.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Familiarity with remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Zoom).

Desirable

  • Experience with job costing, WIP reports, and project-based accounting.

  • Familiarity with other Zoho apps (e.g., Zoho CRM, Zoho Projects).

  • AAT qualified or equivalent bookkeeping certification.

  • Experience supporting senior management with financial insights.
