Position Summary:
The work of a high school counselor is to support and foster all students’ knowledge, skills, & abilities as they prepare for the ever-changing world of the 21st century. The high school counselor will virtually assist students in their academic, personal/social, and career development in collaboration with their parents/learning coaches and the high school team, including the special education department, 504 case management, career pathway coordinators, and additional key stakeholders.
 
The School Counselor will be responsible for the successful completion of the following tasks:
  • New high school student academic placement and transition support
  • Review student transcripts and the entry of credits into the online transcript system
  • Weekly live lesson sessions, in partnership with the counseling team
  • Co-facilitation of groups, such as Coping Skills and/or Grief and Loss
  • Partnership with SAP school social workers in support of child welfare
  • Awareness and monitoring of high school graduation requirements, including special requirements such as ACT 158
  • Participant in meetings central to the well-being of students, such as engagement and truancy
  • Work with the administrative assistants to obtain school records from the student’s previous school (where applicable) and forwarding student records when appropriate
  • Key participant in crisis intervention practices
  • Report and refer critical incidents that jeopardize student well-being as obligated by law, administrative regulations, or ethical Stay abreast of all state regulations relating to incident reporting and documentation
  • Assist teachers when students enroll mid-semester, making sure that teachers receive guidance on integrating the students into their coursework, and ensuring that previous grades, credits, and evaluations are handled appropriately
  • Implement special programs or education in high school testing, such as Advanced Placement support, PSAT, SAT and ACT Preparation, and college entrance preparation
  • Support student athletes in registration and adherence to NCAA guidelines and practices
  • Help students to research and understand their post-secondary career and educational options
  • Educate students and parents about college admissions requirements and financial aid
  • Returning student course selection
  • Other duties as assigned
Education/Qualifications
  • Minimum Education/Certification:
    • Master’s in Education, School Counseling
    • Educational Specialist I or II
  • Experience Requirements:
    • Experience in prior high school setting preferred
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Strong technology skills (especially with Google Suite)
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Customer focused approach
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • High degree of flexibility
  • Team player with demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in fast-paced environment
