The Manager, Controls Engineering will focus on the development and management of an internal team within the Controls Engineering group. They will create an inspiring collaborative team environment with an open communication culture, set clear team goals, delegate tasks, and coach/mentor Associates to successfully deliver controls engineering projects. This position will provide leadership and development to our FORTNA associates of varying levels of experience and focus on the management of the group’s resource planning and project execution across all delivery projects. This role will support promoting and developing the approach and methodologies for the delivery of projects from the initial lead up to the implementation. As a management position, the technical function of this position is to be responsible for directing the design and documentation of controls deliverables, project methodology and framework and providing inputs to the development of the Controls Engineering software packages.  

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership
    • Create a vision of the team in alignment with FORTNA’s vision and goals
    • Organizing and conducting training of team members to maximize their potential
    • Ensure development of associates using regular feedback, quarterly performance reviews, and by maintaining a skills matrix
    • Creating a pleasant working environment that inspires the team and takes care of the health, safety, and welfare of associates
    • Motivating the team to create commitment and to achieve organizational goals
    • Ensures a strong and robust communication process and resolves conflicts
    • Organize team initiatives by leading team meetings, leading 1:1, and continuously work on team canvas
    • Involved in the hiring of new talents
  • Management
    • Oversee multiple projects in Controls Engineering within NA & EMEA region regarding standardization
    • Assess and review FORTNA's current processes and tools within the team and adapt to industry standards and make recommendations and suggestions to improve and streamline the implementation process
    • Leading generation and enhancement of department standard documentation and procedures to improve the quality and efficiency of the Controls Engineering group
    • Constantly working to expand knowledge of industry best practices and the latest technology for the whole team
    • Set FORTNA department standards in controls engineering
    • Define and follow KPI's representing the success of the team
    • Resource planning of the team
    • Providing inputs to the development of the control software packages used on all our projects
    • Conducting the Controls Design Review (CDR) process
  • Projects
    • Designing, Leading, directing, and supporting multiple projects through the detail design and functional code development
    • Providing input and influencing Description of Operation (DOO) & Functional Specification Documentation (FSD) to ensure documents align with controls engineering implementation plans
    • Direct project teams and support resources during the development of RFP/Supplier Selection, detailed electrical design packages, equipment procurement activities, installation drawing packages, and support of installation contractor, Project Manager, and Site Manager with installation efforts
    • Leading Controls Layout review meetings with internal teams and Client resulting in design acceptance
    • Taking responsibility for FORTNA Warehouse Control/Execution System (FORTNA WCS™/FORTNAWES™) Software setup, configuration and menu design including GUI design and development and QNX Operating systems implementation and configuration
    • Specifying FORTNA's network requirements to the Client as needed
    • Developing project schedules and delivering quality solutions on time and within budget
    • Performing testing, debugging, implementation and support during “go-live” at Client site
    • Making modifications and troubleshooting industrial motor controls, I/O and pneumatic subsystems, and variable speed drives
    • Developing, maintaining, and providing documentation to FORTNA’s Technical Writer
    • Providing training to staff at Client site
    • Responding to Client issues with immediacy
    • Completing support tickets that include detailed problem analysis and resolutions
    • Providing FORTNA WCS™/FORTNAWES™ control enhancements/requirements to the Software team to increase productivity and accuracy

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field.
  • Four-plus years of experience working with FORTNA WCS™/FORTNAWES™ and considered a Subject Matter Expert
  • Fluent in English and conversational in a second regional language, preferably German or Spanish
  • Experience in material handling systems
  • Experience in conveyor control systems
