Job description

Our Company:

PracticeTek is a large and established healthcare technology company, providing comprehensive software solutions to dental, orthodontic, chiropractic, optometry, and other healthcare clinics. We empower clinicians and their teams to deliver better patient care through innovative and user-friendly technology.

At PracticeTek, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Work with dynamic technology solutions that are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the healthcare industry.

  • Collaborate with a talented and passionate team of individuals who are dedicated to improving the lives of patients and healthcare providers.

  • Make a real impact on the healthcare industry by helping to improve the efficiency and quality of care.

  • Build a rewarding career with opportunities for growth and development.

Engineering Department:

The Engineering department at PracticeTek is responsible for designing, developing, and scaling our SaaS platform to meet the needs of thousands of healthcare providers. Working closely with Product and Design teams, Engineering ensures the seamless delivery of performant, secure, and cost-effective software solutions.

The Engineering team is responsible for the foundational infrastructure, security, and reliability functions that support all PracticeTek products. This includes cloud architecture, observability, cost efficiency, and compliance with regulatory requirements like HIPAA and PCI.

The Career Opportunity:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Payments and Shared Services team, you will be a key contributor in building our enterprise-wide payments platform. You’ll tackle complex challenges by creating robust .NET microservices on AWS that handle transactions for multiple brands in an event-driven architecture. This role gives you the opportunity to shape core payment features — from integrating with diverse payment providers to ensuring PCI-compliant security — all while working with modern technologies and mentoring other engineers. Your contributions will directly enhance how our healthcare clients manage payments, bringing efficiency and reliability to a critical part of the business.

Areas of Accountability:

  • Design and implement key components of the shared payments microservices ecosystem, using .NET (C#) for service development and AWS cloud services for deployment and data management.

  • Build integration layers for various third-party payment providers and internal services, ensuring each transaction flows smoothly through our API gateway and messaging systems.

  • Work with the Lead Engineer and DevOps team to ensure services are highly available, fault-tolerant, and observable (with proper logging/monitoring) in our Kubernetes-based environment.

  • Apply strong security practices in development: handle sensitive payment data appropriately (tokenization, encryption) and contribute to designs that meet PCI compliance requirements.

  • Conduct thorough code reviews and provide mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with product managers and UX designers to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions that provide a seamless payment experience for end users.

  • Optimize the performance of payment services (e.g., minimizing latency, improving throughput) and swiftly troubleshoot any production issues that arise in our distributed systems.

  • Continuously explore new technologies, frameworks, or patterns (cloud services, .NET advancements, event streaming, etc.) that enhance the payments platform, and share insights with the team.

Competencies for Success

  • 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with advanced proficiency in .NET/C# and a track record of building scalable backend systems.

  • Experience developing cloud-based applications on AWS (or similar cloud platform) and deploying/managing them with containers and Kubernetes.

  • Familiarity with integrating third-party APIs or services, ideally payment gateways or financial services, and handling asynchronous workflows reliably.

  • Strong understanding of microservice architecture principles, RESTful API design, and the use of message brokers or event buses in event-driven architecture.

  • Knowledge of software security best practices and compliance requirements; experience working in a PCI-compliant environment (or similar regulated data environment) is a plus.

  • Proven ability to debug and resolve complex issues in distributed systems, and to write efficient, maintainable code for long-term platform health.

  • Comfortable working with front-end technologies or teams (especially React) to ensure end-to-end solutions, even if your primary focus is backend development.

  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills, experienced in agile development processes, and enthusiastic about mentoring and knowledge sharing within the engineering team.

  • A proactive, ownership mindset – you take initiative to improve codebases, address gaps, and drive projects to completion that positively impact multiple products.
