About the team and role:
Dave is looking for an experienced and motivated Data Engineering Manager to join our team. As a Data Engineering Manager at Dave, you will lead and grow a team responsible for building and maintaining the core data infrastructure that powers our financial products and analytics. You will ensure that our data platform is scalable, reliable, and optimized for performance, enabling teams across the organization to make data-driven decisions. The Data Engineering team supports critical areas such as data ingestion, processing, transformation, quality, and governance. This role reports to the Senior Director of Software Engineering in the interim.
What you’ll do:
Hire, lead, mentor, and motivate talented data engineers and help them grow professionally.
Collaborate with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Data Analysts, Engineering Managers, and business stakeholders to shape the data roadmap and align it with company goals.
Lead the design and development of scalable data pipelines and data warehouse/platform components that support real-time and batch data processing needs.
Foster engineering best practices around data modeling, pipeline reliability, performance optimization, testing, and observability.
Champion high-quality, cost efficient data architecture and drive continuous improvements in our data infrastructure.
Review code, architecture, and when necessary, contribute hands-on to critical architectural design. Advocate for and implement best practices in data governance, security, and compliance.
Define and track metrics to measure the performance, reliability, and quality of data systems.
Partner with analytics and data science teams to enable data-driven insights and machine learning at scale.
Communicate the purpose and "why" behind data priorities and initiatives across the team and stakeholders. Proactively remove roadblocks for team members, both technical and operational.
Ensure that information and context flow freely between the Data Engineering team and the broader engineering organization and leadership.
Promote and support changes initiated by cross-functional peers, leaders, and company-wide initiatives.
What you’ll need:
6+ years of software or data engineering experience, with 1.5+ years in an engineering management role hiring and building diverse, inclusive high-performing teams
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related technical field. MS or PhD in databases, distributed systems is a plus.
Proven experience designing and operating scalable, secure, and cost efficient data infrastructure
Strong experience with Airflow for data orchestration, DBT for data transformation and data modeling.
Hands-on experience with Fivetran, Talend/Stitch, Airbyte, or similar DBT tools
Experience with Data Warehousing solutions such as BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, or similar managed solutions
Experience in SQL, Python and Database technologies.
Strong communication skills and the ability to partner across disciplines (e.g., product, analytics, engineering)
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with a passion for building robust systems
Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution and experience working in a fast-growing startup environment.
Nice-to-have:
Familiarity with GCP’s data tooling (e.g. Dataflow, CloudComposer, BigQuery, PubSub) or similar cloud tooling
Experience with event-driven architectures or real-time data pipelines
Experience working in Fintech or regulated data environments
