Job description

The Senior Financial Accountant is a key member of the accounting team, responsible for overseeing general ledger accounting to support the core operations of Sage Publications. This role directly supports the Senior Manager, US GAAP Accounting in developing and maintaining sound accounting policies and procedures to ensure accurate monthly reconciliations and timely preparation of year-end financial statements. This position requires a strong understanding of US GAAP and the ability to work independently across a range of accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, revenue reporting, period-end closings, journal entry preparation, and balance sheet reconciliations. The Senior Financial Accountant will also perform variance analysis, collaborate with international teams, and contribute to special projects and financial analysis as needed by management.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • In coordination with the Senior Manager, manage the general ledger and month-end close process for corporate accounting. Primary responsibilities include maintaining updated progress tracker of monthly, quarterly, and annual close, preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciling key balance sheet accounts, and ensuring timely resolution of reconciling items.
  • Leverages strong understanding and application of U.S. GAAP to interpret and apply new accounting standards. Support in the development and communication of accounting policies at both global and local levels.
  • Based on accounting best practices, develop and lead special projects aimed at improving operational efficiency by leveraging both new and existing financial systems and tools within the finance function. Support process improvement initiatives to streamline financial operations, increase efficiency, and adapt to Sage’s evolving business needs.
  • Conduct budget-to-actual and period-over-period variance analysis to identify and explain key business trends and changes.
  • Support the parent company’s financial statement audit by providing accurate, high-quality data and coordinating timely responses from cross-functional teams to meet audit requirements.
  • Support cross-functional teams and stakeholders to streamline and transform financial close and reporting processes, supporting the implementation of new financial systems.
  • Support the implementation of enhancements to financial applications to drive increased efficiency and automation in the month-end close and financial reporting processes. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline operational workflows and enhance decision-making by leveraging analytical tools such as Power BI and Tableau. Focus on continuous process improvement of the month-end close process, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of account reconciliations, and supporting accounting best practices across the organization.
  • Collaborate with and provide essential support to cross-functional departments, including Trade and Royalty Payments Processing, Payroll, Financial Planning & Analysis, Tax, and Financial Systems, to ensure seamless financial operations
  • Provide ad hoc support to the Senior Manager, US GAAP Accounting and Director of U.S. Accounting, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

This may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Minimum 4 or more years of relevant experience and expert knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls over financial reporting required.
  • BA or BS, in accounting or finance, desired, graduate degree in accounting a plus; or equivalent and relevant experience.
  • Active California Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification in good standing.
  • Public accounting experience a plus
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence in the ability to navigate through challenging matters.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and highly agile when faced with new and unfamiliar matters.
  • Detail oriented, analytical, and ability to multitask in fast paced and dynamic environment.
  • Must be able to express accounting concepts clearly both orally and in writing in a way which can be understood by both specialists and non-specialists.
  • Well organized, excellent at planning ahead, able to adjust to changing priorities and manage a team to deliver on time and to a high professional standard.
