Position Summary
The Director, Professional Coding creates the strategic vision and provides organizational leadership for professional services coding; oversees daily operations and drives change to ensure accuracy and quality of professional services coding assignment across the system, assuring accuracy and timeliness in coding of the medical record. Collaborates with Professional Services, organizational leadership and medical staff to improve the overall quality and completeness of clinical documentation for professional services. The role serves as the translator from clinical to financial. Provides operational oversight to ensure accurate code assignment and charging for professional services.
Highlighted Responsibilities
- Develops strategy, plans, and leads initiatives that impacts the business models (e.g., shared services initiatives) and align with company vision/overall goals.
- Directs the continued development and ongoing activity of professional billing and coding designed to strengthen internal controls governing documentation and coding for optimum reimbursement and compliance.
- Responsible for developing, operationalizing, and monitoring best practice for professional billing and coding and processes throughout the organization, including affiliates, leading to the compliant, and timely coding of encounters for use in claim submission, and regulatory, quality, and population health reporting to support the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
- This leader, in collaboration with the organizational leadership, manages the planning and operational direction of professional billing and coding for the organization.
- This leader, in collaboration with direct-report managers, is responsible for the coordination and administration of the professional billing and coding function ensuring organizational performance is in alignment with the short term and long-term coding goals of the organization.
- Provides oversight of the development of standardized policies, procedures, and practices related to professional billing and coding and documentation integrity across the organization.
- Develops and monitors overall compliance of professional billing and coding related KPI’s and other metrics which include financial and quality analysis.
- Serves as subject matter expert for organizational strategic projects Initiates, designs, leads, executes, and manages projects associated with professional billing and coding, documentation integrity and other organizational initiatives.
- Maintains strategic and tactical working relationships, and actively shares and collaborates
- Conducts data and root cause analysis and communicates professional billing and coding and data integrity opportunities and/or concerns to key stakeholders in a timely and effective manner.
This is primarily a remote position with some travel into the office required.
Work Experience
- At least 5 years professional billing and/or coding experience required
- At least 3 years management experience strongly preferred
- At least 3 years Acute Care Outpatient Coding Experience preferred
EDUCATION
- Two-year associate's degree or equivalent experience required
- Four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent experience strongly preferred
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based (CCS-P), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required
