Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

Public Rights Project (PRP) is a public interest legal nonprofit, headquartered in Oakland, with a remote team based throughout the U.S. Our mission is to close the gap between the promise of our laws and the lived reality of our most vulnerable communities. Since 2017, we have been working at the intersection of community organizing and state and local government enforcement to build a scalable, equitable community-based enforcement model to protect civil rights and advance economic justice.

We support progressive state and local governments, including attorneys General, district attorneys, and city attorneys’ offices with legal strategy, research, fellowships, and community partnerships to help offices develop high-impact legal cases.

Public Rights Project is seeking a Network Communications Manager to play a key role in identifying and executing on content and communications needs for our network of local government partners, including elected officials and government staff. Reporting to the Director of Communications, they will be responsible for creating content that uplifts local government, supporting media relations activities for our partners, and ensuring we develop success stories and communications resources that advance our program goals.

The Network Communications Manager will collaborate closely with the program teams to proactively tell the story of local government and our partners. They will find stories of impact, manage place-based activities in our media relations program, provide support for PRP events, and analyze metrics to guide strategy for the communications and marketing team. The ideal candidate is a strong writer with a passion for elevating local government and leveraging media opportunities to tell the story of our work together.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and execute media strategies and plans for local government partners in partnership with the Director of Communications.
  • Research and write briefing materials, press releases, key messages, and talking points in consultation with program staff and the full communications and marketing team.
  • Develop and implement strategic media relations plans that support broader communication goals and strategies.
  • Help deliver high-profile media interviews, spokesperson opportunities, and media events for PRP’s partners that advance its programmatic, partnership, and policy goals in collaboration with other team members.
  • Cultivate relationships with journalists and producers who cover PRP’s issues at the local and regional levels.
  • Synthesize complex information to pitch to local and trade publications.
  • Organize press conferences, roundtables, and media briefings in support of key media moments; pitch and manage a range of internal and external engagements.
  • Coordinate with colleagues using a project management system to ensure that all activities, milestones, and deliverables for priority communications and marketing efforts are being proactively tracked and managed, ensuring the team delivers timely and effective results.
  • Track and report on performance metrics (media reach, engagement, amplification, etc.) to inform ongoing strategy in collaboration with the Senior Digital Marketing Manager...
  • Create a monthly external newsletter from concept to completion: identify, curate, and organize potential stories; draft long-form corresponding articles when necessary; write short summary blurbs for newsletter, and follow the organization QA process for email review.
  • Partner with the Senior Writer/Editor on content pieces that highlight local government partners.
  • Partner with the Senior Digital Marketing Manager in elevating local government partners on social media and creating social media toolkits for local government partners.
  • Partner with the graphic design team in developing and organizing assets for online and print communications (i.e., website, graphics, printed materials, etc.).
  • Provide communications support for PRP events.
  • Help maintain a library of communications templates, style guides, and partner-facing materials to ensure consistency and efficiency across the organization.
  • Contribute to the monthly content calendar to manage content and plan specific, timely campaigns.
  • Collaborate with team members to produce daily media clips and emails; help track audience engagement; and contribute to internal analytics reports.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • 6-8 years of relevant professional experience, ideally within a government, electoral campaign, or policy environment, and at least 2 years managing media relations activities.
  • Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Experience working directly with elected officials or candidates for elected office preferred.
  • Passion and commitment to using the power of government to protect marginalized communities’ civil rights and freedoms.
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of Public Rights Project, especially diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to translate technical information into accessible content for audiences with various backgrounds, interests, and levels of understanding, focusing on the impact of the work in real-world terms.
  • Strong writing, editing, copy editing, and proofing skills, with strategic attention to messaging, voice, and accuracy.
  • Strong planning skills, highly responsive, and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines.
  • Effective time management skills, with the ability to maintain productivity, adapt to shifting priorities, and move through ambiguity.
  • Ability to work special events as well as handle unexpected deadlines and emergency communications required.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced environment while being highly responsive with team members to ensure cohesive communications and branding efforts.
