Job description

Octopus Deploy sets the standard for Continuous Delivery, empowering software teams to deliver value in an agile way. Over 4,000 organizations globally –  including Ubisoft, ASOS, Xero, monday.com, Stack Overflow, NASA, and Disney – rely on our Continuous Delivery, GitOps, and release orchestration solutions.

Founded in Australia in 2012, our team of over 300 Octonauts now spans the globe. We combine high growth and big ambitions with a sustainable, balanced working environment. Our revenue has grown consistently between 30–50% every year for the past 8 years, and we’ve been profitable for 10 out of the past 11 years.

We’ve been remote-first since 2015 and work with an uncommon level of transparency. You can read our public handbook to learn how we work. We have a transparent approach to compensation that ensures people doing the same work with the same skill get paid the same, with well-defined career pathways. We foster a supportive, collaborative, and high-trust environment. We leave our job titles at the door and focus on doing what’s best for our customers and team. Our leaders never shy away from answering the tough questions at our all-hands calls or in 1:1s. We conduct interviews and onboarding virtually as part of being a remote-first company.

Overview

The Cloud Authentication team is on a mission to enhance the security and availability of hosted authentication providers for Octopus Cloud. You'll contribute to Customer Identity and Access Management projects.

We're looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to join our growing team, which includes a Senior Product Manager and Lead Engineer. If applying your engineering management expertise to our mission sounds exciting, we'd love to hear from you!

We are looking for people who live and work in Australia and New Zealand to join our remote-first team. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for candidates outside of these countries.

Why this job is exciting:
  • You’ll have the opportunity to lead a sustainable, high-performing team of autonomous engineers, holding them accountable for their results and letting them manage how they get there.
  • Your team will focus on a strategically important part of our business, across areas critical to operational security as well as key user experiences for customers, in the identity and access management areas of our products
  • We offer great benefits, including generous laptop and home office allowances, plus stock options!
  • We value transparency and fairness in every aspect of our business. For example, our executive leadership team shares monthly updates on company performance, and our pay structures are designed to pass the printer test.
  • Trust and autonomy. Octonauts are treated like adults and are trusted to find the best way to work for the task at hand without managers looking over their shoulder.
  • Remote first: work from wherever you feel most productive.

  • A typical day might include:
  • Working flexibly in your home office, using a device of your choice, with or without music, in an atmosphere you create for yourself.
  • Clarifying the goals, roles, development, and execution plans for your team.
  • Helping your team understand our strategy and how they contribute to the big picture.
  • Proactively coaching people remotely, accelerating them along their personal growth trajectory.
  • Contributing positively to how we approach people and culture in the engineering team, including attracting and growing talent, supporting those who are thriving and also those who are struggling, building our culture, and fostering great career growth.
  • Influencing and uplifting our practices by advocating across teams, functions and departments.

  • A typical day might include
  • Has experience leading a large team of engineers delivering business impact, with a well-equipped managerial toolbox.
  • Has successfully managed teams in a remote-first environment
  • Has worked in a cross-functional team alongside other leaders such as a Product Manager, Designer, or similar
  • Has a technical background in software engineering
  • Takes accountability for the people in their team, the way they work, and the results they deliver.
  • Identifies and diagnoses dysfunction in their team, and resolves it in a timely manner to ensure your team performs at its best.
  • Confidently coaches developers at any level to reach their full potential.
  • Confidently helps their team navigate their way through large organisational change.
  • Gives and receives "radically candid" feedback that challenges and demonstrates care.
  • Create a culture of belonging and inclusion, ensuring everyone has an equitable opportunity to grow regardless of background, identity, or experience.
  • Compensation
Octopus has an internallyopen and transparent system for compensation. Any Octonaut can view the compensation for any role at any level. This ensures people doing the same work with the same skill get paid the same.

The compensation for this role is:
    Level 5 (Senior Engineering Manager): Maturing: $205k AUD / $220k NZD, Performing: $230k AUD / $230k NZD

    Salaries exclude Super and KiwiSaver.

Benefits include a minimum of 25 days annual leave, up to 10 days of paid sick and carers leave, 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave with flexible return options, and stock options. Learn more.

    Interview Process
Below is the interview process you can expect for this role. We know interviewing can seem daunting, but rest assured we designed our interview process to move quickly while still getting you all the information you need.

Step 1 [30m] – 👋 Introductory call with Talent Acquisition to discuss your background, the role, and answer your questions.
Step 2 [90m] – ☕️ Cultural Interview with 2 senior engineering leaders at Octopus, where we delve into your management experience – you will receive a preview of the questions we might ask in advance. We will also take time to answer your questions.
Step 3 [40m] – 💻 Technical Interview with a Principal Engineer and the Technical Lead from the team you will be joining. You will not be required to write code. Instead, they will be looking to see that you can understand and communicate technical concepts clearly. We are hoping to simulate a real-life discussion of the sort that you may have with the engineers in your team to ensure that everyone can understand each other and work well together. The discussion will centre on one or more of the products or teams you have led in the past.
Step 4 [30m] – 👥 Final Team Interview – we introduce you to some of our cross-functional team members. This interview allows our engineers to build a sense of agency over who will lead and manage them. It is also another chance to ask us questions on top of your mind and learn from various perspectives and experiences of folks on the team.

Our public employee handbook is the best place to learn more about life at Octopus. It includes our values, how we structure teams, career progression, leave and benefits, and much more.

If you're enthusiastic about this position, even if you don’t meet all the criteria above, we wholeheartedly encourage you to submit your application. Our talent team is in-house, and we recognize that every individual brings something unique. We take the time to review every application and consider how you might add to the team.

We know your time is precious. If you apply, we promise to update you at least once per week about the status of your application and to give you clear expectations for each step in the journey.
