GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Staff Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we redefine experiences for our customers. You will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the velocity of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities.
The Senior Staff Engineer reports directly to the Senior Engineering Manager of the Foundation Document Platform team within our Platform Engineering organization. This tech lead works with other engineers to innovate and build a unified and modernized document management system that integrates with multiple business applications to serve critical business processes. You will lead the strategy and execution of the technical roadmap of the foundational sub-area of the entire document management platform. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in large-scale distributed system design and development.
Position Responsibilities
As a Senior Staff Engineer, you will:
Focus on multiple areas in the document management domain; develop and execute technical software development strategy
Act as the functional tech lead to for the cross-functional product development team; and be responsible and accountable for the quality, reliability and performance of the solutions
Coordinate and collaborate with product managers, engineering team members and customers to solve complex problems, ensure the seamless integration and alignment of solutions with organizational goals
Leverage open-source frameworks and embrace the cloud native development paradigm
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the team, and Influence and educate leadership at all levels
Always push for engineering excellence; Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
Qualifications
Fluency and specialization with at least two modern languages such as Java, Golang, Python or C# including object-oriented design
Extensive knowledge and experience of building data intensive large-scale distributed systems with focus on fault-tolerance and throughput
Experience building products of micro-services oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs
Experience building the architecture and design of new and current systems (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling)
Excellent communication skills, able to communicate complete technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Fluency in DevOps concepts and best practices in CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as a code
Experience with application performance monitoring tools and performance assessments
In-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms
Experience with solving analytical problems with quantitative approaches
Ability to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environment
Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication)
Experience
10+ years of professional software development experience on large-scale distributed systems for high-traffic internet applications or business-critical enterprise systems
8+ years of experience with architecture and design
6+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service
6+ years of experience in open-source frameworks
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience

Annual Salary
$130,000.00 - $260,000.00The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
