Job description

Hourly: $16.50- $17.50

Position Summary

Children's Aid runs a summer day camp in Chappaqua, NY that brings together children from Manhattan, the Bronx, and Westchester. Campers and staff are bused to and from the camp each day. The purpose of this camp is to provide traditional summer camp activities (swimming, arts & crafts, sports, horsemanship, etc.) in the context of relationship building. The children who attend this camp are from different socio-economic, cultural, and racial backgrounds, and range in age from 6-13

The Summer Camp Support Staff is responsible for specific tasks that are consistent with the role as outlined in the Empire State Agreement with Children’s Aid. There are two areas of tasks: Sustainability and Mental/Health- Anti Bias Programming. The Summer Camp Support Staff works 29.5 hours/Week until August 29th, 2025, through NYS funding direct to the intern. Additional hours can be arranged with the intern.

Essential Duties

  • Sustainability Projects: (pre camp)-prepare, plant and maintain the learning garden for the summer day camp, wood chipping ropes course area to protect trees and trails for erosion control, painting murals (Peace Path, USA Map) to support Anti Bias/Hate programming. There will be other projects to prepare the camp for opening on June 30th.
  • Sustainability work involves painting, cleaning, planting, prepping surfaces, setting up watering system, weeding, soil preparation, composting, garden fence repair, moving wood chips, moving equipment and supplies, setting up rooms and maintaining the drainage system of the camp.
  • During the day camp, there will be continued sustainability projects as needed.
  • Mental Health/Anti Bias: during the summer day camp, the responsibilities will involve direct supervision of activities with the campers during choice time. The activities will range from area supervision, to leading games, to intervening in conflicts. Training for the interns will be conducted by the camp staff. The intern’s assignments may be adjusted as needs be to supervise campers and engage them in positive activities.
  • August Post Camp: As part of the closing of the camp, the intern helps to put equipment away and clean up program areas.
  • Enforce camp policies and procedures
  • Attend 3 days of training and orientation prior to camp.

  • Must be able to collaborate with all staff and interact with children.
