Job description

EQUANS are recruiting for a H&S Advisor to be based in Manchester. This is a permanent full-time role working 37.5 hours per week. On offer is a competitive salary, car allowance, bonus and benefits package.

General Overview

The main purpose of the role is to support the company in the operation of company systems ISO standards covering the effective management of quality, health, safety and environment. This will include extensive working on live projects which will be located all around the UK and not restricted to one area. To understand, adhere and implement the company SHEQ policy/strategy and ensure full compliance to Approved Codes of Practice and legislation.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide guidance and advice at pre-construction stage to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and company standards
  • Work with the Planning Department to identify key milestones / high risk activities to identify risk during construction stage
  • Work with the Bid Team during tender stage to ensure all relevant information is available and provided as requested
  • Ensure SHEQ is considered at all pre-commencement stages and relevant control measures identified
  • On a day to day basis ensure sites comply with statutory requirements and company standards whilst providing relevant guidance and advice.
  • Carry out pre-planned site audits to ensure compliance providing feedback via the company’s reporting system.
  • Highlighting areas where poor practice and/or significant risk have occurred. Where necessary preventing works continuing on site.
  • Assisting in the development of risk assessments relating to SHEQ on a site-to-site basis
  • Proactively working with operational teams during the project lifecycle to ensure that SHEQ is considered at all stages and that relevant control measures are identified
  • Assisting the business with the implementation of the standards and systems
  • Undertaking site visits where key milestones have been identified during programme. This will require working with the relevant construction teams to ensure successful delivery of high-risk activities.
  • Audit subcontractor paperwork and safe systems of work during construction phase
  • Work to achieve standardisation across the region
  • Assist with office audits and risk assessments
  • Work closely with Clients
  • Work with third party auditors both internally and externally
  • Raise close out of corrective actions raised, open incident reports, and non-conformances with regards to significant site issues.
  • Produce site specific activity report weekly with key factors
  • Investigating incidents and producing detailed factual reports identifying root causes and recommendations for improvement
  • Liaising with enforcing authorities as necessary.
  • Keeping up to date with new legislation and best practices in the industry through regular reading of journals and relevant website/ site visits
  • Raise awareness on SHEQ issues through toolbox talks and briefings, delivering training where necessary.
  • Provide short term cover where necessary for other advisors in the region
  • Attendance at regional SHEQ meetings across north west
  • Attendance at regional management meetings as SHEQ representative

Who are we looking for?

Essential

Key Skills

  • Suitable qualifications in either H&S, quality or environmental management. E.g. NEBOSH General Certificate, IEMA etc.
  • Relevant experience of working as part of a SHEQ team
  • Ability to interpret legislation and Approved Codes of Practice
  • Report writing
  • Providing proactive support to operational business units.
  • Up to date knowledge of UK legislation in relation to SHE
  • Ability to work remotely
  • First rate communication and influencing skills
  • Good at developing relationships with Operational leadership
  • Flexible – able to work at all levels and at hands on level
  • Proven written communication skills
  • Good level of numeracy
  • Demonstrate up to date CPD
  • Computer literate in MS Office


Desirable

  • NEBOSH Diploma in H & S or Environmental management, and/or equivalent.
  • At least three years relevant construction sector experience
  • Operation of ISO based systems
  • Specialist knowledge in construction
  • Report writing
  • Development of strategies for improvement
