The Opportunity…

GRID Alternatives is seeking a part-time Contracts Attorney to support our legal team in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a variety of contracts and agreements. In some cases, the Contracts Attorney will directly handle the reviewing, drafting, and negotiating of contracts, while in many cases, they will be responsible for coordinating pro-bono legal counsel to perform these tasks. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in contract law, excellent attention to detail, and a passion for advancing equitable access to renewable energy solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, including vendor agreements, grant agreements, partnership agreements, and subcontracts, or coordinate pro-bono legal counsel to handle these tasks.
  • Build and curate GRID Alternative's library of approved contract and agreement templates.
  • Advise on contractual risks and compliance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure contracts align with GRID Alternatives’ mission and operational needs.
  • Provide legal guidance on risk mitigation strategies related to contract terms.
  • Manage relationships with pro-bono legal counsel in terms of contract review, lease reviews, ect.
  • Support other legal and compliance matters as needed.


What You Need To Bring To This Role...

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction- Primarily working within the state of California
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in contract law, preferably in the nonprofit, renewable energy, or construction sectors.
  • "adept collaboration and communication skills"
  • Background in government (federal, state, local) contracts and/or construction contracts preferred for government and requirement for construction
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong background in contract law, excellent attention to detail, and a passion for advancing equitable access to renewable energy solutions.
  • Strong understanding of contract negotiation, risk assessment, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote work environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Although work schedule can be flexible, availability during typical work hours is expected.
  • Experience coordinating and managing pro-bono legal counsel is a plus.
  • Passion for social equity and environmental justice is a plus.
  • Hired CA candidates must be able to pass a screening for drugs that are illegal in the state of California, including: amphetamine, cocaine metabolite, opiates, and PCP.


Where you will sit & the places you may go…

This position is remote and can work at near by GRID offices if desired. This role may require 10%-25% out-of-town travel to regional offices and special projects. Availability to work nights and weekends may be required.

GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work travel and/or travel reimbursement for personal vehicle use. In this instance, applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.

This is a part-time, exempt position. Salary pay commensurate with experience within the pay band ($62k-$115k annually). This position is estimated 20- 24 hours per week.
