Senior Director, Construction Contracts and Risk Management

Reports To: AVP of Global Capital and Strategic Real Estate Procurement

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced construction contracts and risk management professional to join our Capital Procurement and Strategic Real Estate team. This role is pivotal in supporting our company's ambitious multi - billion capital expansion plans in the next decade. The ideal candidate will possess a mix of legal acumen with considerable contracts experience in the areas of contract lifecycle management, construction claims resolution, and general procurement process improvement. A deep understanding of construction contracting, including the challenges and risks associated with large-scale projects, is crucial. This position requires a strategic thinker with excellent project management skills to support the negotiation of complex contracts while managing a robust and effective dispute resolution process while always ensuring compliance with legal and company policies. Experience in supporting mega capital projects in excess of $1 billion is also crucial. 

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

  • Contract Management:
    • Lead the development, negotiation, and execution of complex contracts to support capital expansion projects.
    • Ensure all contracts comply with legal risk tolerances and company policies.
    • Participate in the development and roll-out of a comprehensive contract lifecycle management system that includes template management, contract negotiation, execution, and administration.
    • Develop and implement construction contract improvement and negotiation best practices initiatives.
  • Claims Resolution:
    • Administer, manage, resolve, and document all claims related to construction and capital procurement projects with an emphasis on efficiency.
    • Develop strategies for effective claims prevention and resolution.
    • Collaborate with legal counsel to avoid and, if necessary, manage litigation.
  • Procurement Support:
    • Work closely with the procurement team to align contracts with strategic objectives.
    • Provide guidance on procurement activities and supplier agreements.
    • Ensure procurement processes support the company's capital expansion goals.
    • Negotiate favorable terms with suppliers to optimize cost and value.
  • Leadership and Strategy:
    • Mentor team of contract managers
    • Provide regular reports to senior management on contract and claims status.
    • Stay updated on industry trends and legal developments affecting contracts and claims.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Construction Management, Engineering, or related degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in construction contract management, claims resolution, and procurement.
  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization and/or visas for this role.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Role requires working across multiple time zones and includes 10-15% travel, including international travel.
  • Strong knowledge of contract law, procurement regulations, and claims management on construction projects
  • Proven experience in managing commercial and legal risk on large-scale capital projects (greater than $1b)
  • Deep understanding of construction contracting and the challenges and risks associated with large-scale projects.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Certification in contract management (e.g., CPCM, CCCM) or procurement (e.g., CPSM).
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Experience in the construction, engineering, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Familiarity with alternative dispute resolution methods.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$150,000 - $220,000

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
