Access to Justice Practicum: Prison Law Clinic

Course Description:

This Prison Law Clinic is an offering in the Access to Justice Practicum course group. This course is the Level II offering of the Prison Law Clinic.

The Prison Law Clinic course focuses on supporting the Jail Accountability and Information Line service (JAILine service), a phone line operated by community volunteers working in solidarity with people incarcerated at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre (OCDC) and their loved ones. The main focus of the JAILine service is to assist incarcerated people with issues about conditions of confinement and community re-integration. These issues often involve intersecting considerations of human rights law and administrative law, and sometimes aspects of criminal law. Students in the Prison Law Clinic course offer two primary types of support to the JAILine service: first, students are trained to operate a JAILine Legal Information Line service (JAILine-LIL service) and to undertake follow-up work on calls to the service, as appropriate; second, students offer more general support on issues or projects arising from or associated with the JAILine service, potentially including legal research, public legal education, community engagement and law reform advocacy. Through participation in this course, student will develop and enhance their substantive legal knowledge and practical skills in community-oriented legal assistance. In addition, students will develop their understanding of the concept and reality of access to justice and the social context of law and legal needs.
