Job description

The Student Access and Wellness Counselor is a full time employment opportunity. Reporting to the Student Access and Wellness Manager, the Student Access and Wellness Counselor will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of student disability accommodations and initiatives at the University, under the mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended in 2008. Additionally, the Student Access and Wellness Counselor is responsible for managing a student caseload, providing superior student-centered counseling and support to ensure a positive student experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary point of contact to the student providing disability related counseling and support services.
  • Monitor and provide guidance regarding the impact of disability on academic progression, answer student inquiries regarding student lifecycle and progression.
  • Monitor student records and documentation; interpret psycho-educational reports, disability documentation, and related records to determine the impact of disability within the educational environment and use that information to assign reasonable accommodation.
  • Liaison to internal and external departments and agencies on behalf of students with disabilities.
  • Identify student concerns and employ critical thinking with an eye toward effective resolution.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to University faculty and staff on disability and accommodation issues.
  • Articulate the needs of students with disabilities and empower students with disabilities in order to enable full participation in educational programs.
  • ·Provide wellness services related to student wellbeing, including guidance, critical support, outreach and referrals as appropriate.
  • Explain assistive technology and related resources available to students.
  • Communicate ideas for policy and procedural improvements that create greater efficiency and/or enhance the level of service provided to our students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess an understanding of issues relevant to persons with disabilities and post-secondary disability services in order to develop and support services for students with disabilities.
  • A proven record of working successfully with various populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish strong relationships by employing empathetic student-centered counseling practices.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of students and employees, anticipate students' needs, expectations, and requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including ability to make oral and written presentations through various media formats to colleagues to provide information, instructions, or explain subjects of importance.
  • Ability to set priorities to achieve objectives; manage multiple, diverse assignments/projects.

Rate of Pay: $47,356 - $59,195

Compensation Type: Salary at 1.0 full-time equivalence (FTE)

Grade: 6

Compensation Guidance:

The Rate of Pay Field represents the University of Arizona’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.  The University considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, and internal equity. 

The Grade Range Minimum, Midpoint, and Maximum Fields listed below represent a full range of career compensation growth over time in this position and grade. Each unit typically sets starting pay between minimum and midpoint upon hire. The university offers compensation growth opportunities within its career architecture. Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University’s campuses.Thesereports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
