Full-time Assistant or Associate Professor, Data Science – Remote

The Department of Engineering, Data, and Computer Sciences in the College of Business, Engineering, and Technology at National University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Data Science. Rank is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will have a potential or demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and scholarship in their field and a commitment to serving the university’s adult student body. This position is remote. This position works closely with other full-time and part-time faculty within the discipline and administration, contributing to programmatic strategies that ensure program quality, student engagement, and success. We are looking for a candidate who can teach undergraduate and graduate data science courses, especially in AI and machine learning, lead student research projects, and evolve into an academic program director in data science.

Position Summary

Candidates will be evaluated for their level of proficiency and potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The main expectations of this position include:

Teaching

  • Teach and develop online and/or onsite undergraduate and graduate courses in Data Science.
  • Maintain pedagogical and subject matter expertise in data science, especially AI and machine learning.
  • Create an inclusive and positive learning environment.
  • Ensure course and program practices align with compliance and accreditation standards.
  • Adhere to the National University’s academic integrity policy.

Scholarship

  • Maintain a productive scholarship agenda suitable to a teaching university, including leading student research projects.
  • Engage in scholarly activities to maintain professional growth.
  • Participate in professional development as outlined in faculty policies.

Service

  • Participate in curriculum oversight, shared governance, and the student experience.
  • Serve on committees at the program, department, school, college or/and university level and engage in community activities that promote program outreach and university goals.
  • Participate in program meetings and advisory boards to integrate best practices and strategic initiatives.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • PhD degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Statistics, Computational Science or related discipline required.
  • 3+ years professional experience in data science, analytics, predictive modeling, quantitative modeling, or a related domain required; experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or optimization are preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience with Python, R, SQL, or other analytical software for data science applications in industry or academic settings required; programming experience with neural networks, machine learning (with Tensorflow, Keras, or Pytorch), and cloud-based deployment platforms (AWS, Azure) are preferred.
  •  1+ year of teaching in higher education experience required; experience teaching online in higher education is preferred.

Special conditions of employment include:

  • Background check required.
  • Travel is required at least once annually to attend the annual Commencement ceremony (if held onsite).
