Job Description:
The Cancer Registrar is responsible for interpreting complex medical information in electronic medical records to support oncology program activities including oncology service line functions, regulatory and accreditation requirements. This position is responsible for abstraction of clinical data into the Essentia Health cancer registry database in accordance with reporting and data quality requirements of Essentia Health standards, governing national and state registry standards to assist in the achievement of institutional goals.

Education Qualifications:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review newly identified oncology cases diagnosed and/or treated within the organization for reportability utilizing oncology standard setter requirements
  • Utilize the electronic medical record and outside facility medical records to analyze and abstract all required oncology diagnosis and treatment data according to cancer registry standard setter agencies
  • Maintain integrity of the registry database by submitting accurate and timely data in accordance with department benchmarks and state and national regulations
  • Provide support for the Oncology Service Line and Breast Program accreditation activities
  • Participate in cancer registry quality initiatives, program development and process improvement initiatives

Educational Requirements:

  • Associate degree in Cancer Registry Management or health information related field

OR

  • minimum of 2 years cancer registry experience with current ODS credential

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, diagnostic examination, symptoms/characteristics/behavior of oncology diseases and current methods of treatment
  • Knowledge and skill in computer applications
  • Strong time management with the ability to work independently
  • Data entry and analytical skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ year experience as a cancer registrar
  • Experience with electronic medical records and cancer registry systems

Certification/Licensure Required:

  • Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credential required or successful completion of Oncology Data Specialist credential examination within 3 years of employment
