About the Role

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will manage Second Nature’s financial and accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance with regulatory standards. This role will supervise the accounting team, and work closely with internal teams to prepare financial statements, external auditors and vendors, and provide strategic financial guidance to senior management and leadership. This position will serve as a strategic business partner to the CFO, providing critical financial information to make actionable recommendations on strategy and operations.
 

Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Financial Reporting
    • Manage the closing process to prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
    • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of financial information to senior management and leadership.
    • Work closely with our external auditors to complete audits and issue statements on a timely basis. 
    • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Interact with investors and shareholders as required.
  2. Internal Controls
    • Establish and maintain internal control procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with regulations.
    • Conduct periodic audits to assess the effectiveness of internal controls and identify areas for improvement.
    • Implement risk management strategies to mitigate financial risks.
  3. Cash Management
    • Manage cash flow to ensure liquidity and optimize investment opportunities.
    • Oversee accountants who will monitor banking activities, accounts payable, and reconcile bank statements.
    • Work with the FP&A team to develop cash flow forecasting models; present to leadership.
  4. Tax Compliance
    • Coordinate with external tax advisors to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations.
    • Prepare and file tax returns, including income, sales & payroll taxes.
    • Lead regular financial reviews & audits.
  5. Financial Analysis
    • Conduct financial analysis to support strategic decision-making and business planning.
    • Perform variance analysis to explain deviations from budgeted expectations.
  6. Team Leadership
    • Supervise and mentor accounting & payroll staff, providing guidance and support, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
       

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management roles.
  • Thorough understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency in Netsuite ERP software, with a keen interest in leveraging technology to improve financial operations.
  • 8+ years experience supervising an accounting team.
  • Proficiency with Excel/Google Sheets; Tableau; Power BI.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, with experience managing an accounting  team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work East Coast hours (8.30/9 am EST start time)
