Job description

Ember is recruiting an experienced energy analyst, report author and manager to lead its programme of global energy transition workstreams and flagship reports. 

We already have a great reputation for producing engaging and impactful reports, such as the annual Global Electricity Review. Your role will be to manage the analysis, writing and production of such flagship products to the highest standards of accuracy, relevance, accessibility and flair. Responsibilities include managing the team, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, editing reports and playing a role in outreach; expanding and developing the suite of major global reports; overseeing strategy-setting and delivery of global workstreams on issues such as electrification; liaising with and potentially working with Ember’s regional teams; and playing a significant role in the overall leadership and management of Ember.

As Global Programme Director you will be responsible for fostering a constructive and supportive culture within your team, and ensuring positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the conception and production of Ember’s flagship global reports such as the Global Electricity Review (GER) and 2030 Renewable Targets report, to the highest standards of relevance, accuracy, accessibility and flair. Act as Editor for GER and potentially other flagship projects, and work with the Project Manager and other key staff to ensure outputs are delivered efficiently and to schedule.
  •  Develop the suite of flagship reports and spin-off analyses so that Ember remains in the vanguard of the swiftly evolving energy transition landscape.
  •  Oversee development of Ember’s global policy workstreams on electrification, and possible other new workstreams. Develop global workstream on flexibility in conjunction with the Chief Analyst
  •  Ensure that Global Programme’s output is in line with Ember’s strategy and theory of change, and meets guidelines and quality standards.
  •  Line-manage the Global Programme team, including objective setting, performance review, agreeing leave and other absences, workload monitoring and facilitating staff development. 
  • Be a ‘public face’ of Ember to media and stakeholders.
  • Liaise effectively and efficiently with other Ember team directors and the Chief Analyst. and ensure that Global Programme analysts are also liaising as necessary.
  • Where required, support regional teams with the writing and production of regional flagship reports
  • Play a central role in maintaining funder relationships key to the work of the Global Programme, and in developing new funding opportunities
  •  Establish and maintain effective relationships with stakeholder networks key to delivering Global Programme and Ember outcomes
  •  Support the development of Ember policy positions and advocacy strategies.

Requirements

Must have

  • Substantial experience in analysis relating to the global energy transition
  • A good up-to-date knowledge of energy transition facts, trends and statistics – in the power sector, including system flexibility, and in clean electrification
  • Experience of managing a team engaged in delivery of major reports
  • A good understanding of how to use data visualisation and other visual ingredients to communicate points of maximum interest
  • Experience of team or project leadership in a multicultural setting
  • Ability to build constructive and effective relationships with a range of stakeholders, from civil society organisations to policymakers
  • Ability to deliver high-quality output to deadline
  • A keen eye for a persuasive narrative that can align with political realities
  • An appreciation of energy transition benefits beyond decarbonisation, including in energy security, energy access and affordability 
  • Passionate about the global energy transition
  • An open, cooperative working style
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

Nice to have

  • Experience of living and working in a range of cultures
  • Familiarity with international climate change processes and institutions
  • An existing network of contacts in international energy institutions
  • Experience in and enthusiasm for staff development
  • Proficiency in languages other than English

Benefits


Salary: £60,032 – £85,814, dependent on experience and on local cost-of-living.  NB Salaries are adjusted depending on local cost-of-living; specific ranges will be shared with interview invitations.

Contract:  Full time (but only working 9 days every fortnight with no reduction in pay), permanent subject to a 3 month probationary period.  For employees based outside of the UK, a local payroll contract is available, dependent on the country.
