Job description

nDreams Studio Elevation are re-establishing the boundaries of VR. We’re looking for an exceptionally talented Junior Technical Designer to help us explore, create, and deliver world leading innovation in software and VR hardware. With our first title nearing release and a second in early planning stages, it’s a great time to join our fully remote, VR-first studio.    

As a Junior Technical Designer, you will be creating innovative prototypes, exploring fresh VR interactions, and proving out fun, intuitive gameplay mechanics. In this hands-on role you will be collaboratively developing alongside cross disciplined teams to prove out early features, to fully fledged gameplay content. Employing a fail-fast attitude, wield your expertise to empower, discover, and refine intuitive, aspirational, and awe-inspiring gameplay. 

 

The rundown:  

  • 12 month fixed term contract  
  • Full time (37.5 hours per week) 
  • Fully remote within the UK 
  • Salary is competitive and dependent on experience 

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Assist in designing and implementing game features using blueprints. 
  • Help debug and resolve issues with game functionality. 
  • Support the optimization of game systems for performant operation on diverse platforms. 
  • Participate in rapid prototyping to quickly realize and iterate on game concepts. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams: Work closely with programmers, artists, and other designers to ensure cohesive and high-quality game features. 
  • Create and maintain documentation: Write clear and concise documentation for features and systems implemented, including diagrams and visual aids. 
  • Seek regular feedback from stakeholders and experts to refine and improve game features. 
  • Act independently to balance conflicting priorities and escalate issues or blockers promptly. 

Requirements

The skills you’ll need:  

  • Basic scripting skills using Unreal Engine’s Blueprints. 
  • Understanding of Unreal Engine’s feature set and game framework. 
  • Knowledge in one or more areas of technical design, such as UI design, network replication, AI behaviour, player control, interactions, etc. 
  • Ability to debug issues with blueprint systems using visual tools. 
  • Basic understanding of 3D mathematics for gameplay scripting. 
  • Good communication skills to convey technical information to non-technical staff. 
  • The ability to prototype ideas in a fail-fast environment.

The nice to haves:  

  • Some experience in technical design within the games industry, ideally having worked on at least one title released on a current-generation console, PC, VR headset, or mobile. 
  • Experience with Unreal Engine 4 or 5 projects at a professional level.
