Job description

Esusu was founded in 2018 to include everyone on the journey from financial identity and stability toward financial wellness that leads to wealth building. Our mission is to dismantle barriers to housing for working families. We aim to make the impossible possible for millions of Americans who are credit invisible, with no credit history in any of the national consumer reporting agencies. We work with renters and property managers to report on time rental payment data to national consumer reporting agencies as a way to establish and fill gaps in renters' credit reports. We also offer services focused on financial support and well-being and provide access to rent relief through charitable partnerships.  

The Challenge 

As Associate General Counsel, reporting directly to the company’s Chief Legal Officer, you will serve as a key legal leader with comprehensive expertise across transactional, regulatory, and strategic domains. In this highly influential ole, you will drive critical legal initiatives that impact multiple departments, shape organizational legal strategy, and serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership. You will oversee complex regulatory filings, manage litigation matters, and lead strategic legal transactions while developing creative solutions in high-ambiguity environments. Your recognized expertise in risk management, regulatory compliance, and litigation strategy will be essential as you foster a culture of legal excellence and continuous improvement across the organization.

What will you help deliver 

  • Strategic Legal Leadership: Lead complex legal initiatives impacting multiple departments, develop creative solutions to new or undefined challenges, and drive high-stakes projects ensuring legal deliverables align with corporate goals.  
  • Executive Advisory & Influence: Provide expert counsel to executive leadership on sophisticated legal matters, regulatory developments, and strategic risk management to enable business growth while safeguarding organizational interests.  
  • Regulatory & Litigation Management: Oversee complex regulatory filings, litigation strategy, and high-value legal transactions, leveraging your recognized expertise in risk management and compliance to protect the company's interests. 
  • Legal Excellence & Innovation: Drive continuous improvement of departmental workflows and collaborate on organization-wide process improvements, developing scalable legal frameworks that support business objectives while mitigating risk.  
  • Team Development & Mentorship: Coach and develop junior staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning while facilitating collaboration and alignment within the legal team and across departments.  
  • Strategic Negotiation & Execution: Lead negotiation and execution of sophisticated, high-stakes agreements and transactions, ensuring alignment with business strategy and legal best practices.  
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead complex cross-functional collaborations, ensuring legal requirements are seamlessly integrated into business operations while participating in strategy development to align legal approaches with organizational goals. 

Qualifications: 

  • JD from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar. 
  • 8-12 years of experience practicing law, with demonstrated expertise in commercial transactions, regulatory compliance, and in-house counsel responsibilities.  
  • Expertise in fintech, SaaS, ecommerce and FTC, CCPA, and FCRA a plus. 
  • Proven track record of leading legal initiatives that impact multiple departments or functions. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high-ambiguity environments and develop creative solutions to new or undefined challenges. 
  • Experience overseeing complex regulatory filings, litigation management, and strategic legal transactions. 
  • Recognized expertise in risk management, regulatory compliance, and litigation strategy. 
  • Superior written and verbal communication, drafting, and negotiation skills.  
  • Strategic business mindset with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into actionable business guidance. 
  • Exceptional leadership skills with experience coaching junior staff and driving cross-functional collaboration. 
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in strategy development and align legal approaches with organizational goals.
