Job description

The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Specialist, Health Promotions. Working as a member of the Health Promotion & Education department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy. 


Responsible for coordinating, implementing and evaluating evidenced-based lung health programing including youth tobacco prevention and control programs which integrates chronic disease prevention in the Northcentral and Northeast regions of Pennsylvania This is a 100% grant-funded position from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of Tobacco Prevention and Control. 


Location: This position is home-based encourage candidates in Northcentral and Northeastern Pennsylvania to apply. 


Responsibilities: 

  • Implement a multi-component comprehensive public health approach to addressing the youth vaping epidemic through strategies inclusive of system change, education, intervention, and cessation.
  • Implement deliverables for the Northeast and Northcentral Pennsylvania youth tobacco prevention and education programs.
  • Provide support when needed to the Southcentral Pennsylvania youth tobacco prevention and education programs. 
  • Collaborate on tobacco youth prevention mini-grantees and consultant contracts. 
  • Assist with youth prevention mini grant and consultant contract budget spend down and monthly invoicing.
  • Work collaboratively with the Pennsylvania Alliance to Control Tobacco (PACT), Tobacco Resistance Unit (TRU), and TRU+ team, as well as service providers and mini grantees to build and manage youth participation.
  • Ensure media/marketing events pertaining to traditional smoke-free “holidays” are implemented.
  • Collaborate with other key staff members, partners, and organizations working to expand comprehensive youth tobacco prevention and control services.
  • Increase the number of municipalities and outdoor spaces in the Northcentral and Northeast Region at playgrounds and recreational areas that that have implemented 100% tobacco free policies. 
  • Provide technical assistance to municipalities with a tobacco-free ordinance for their playgrounds, recreational areas, gardens, etc. 
  • Develop and submit timely reports as required by the Association and funding sources, including quarterly grant reports, and program metrics reports for youth prevention and engagement, as well as outdoor policy initiatives. 
  • Work collaboratively to educate the Pennsylvania legislators in tobacco control policies.
  • Build, maintain and cultivate relationships with funders, facilitators, and community partners to encourage program delivery, sustainability, and growth including American Lung Association programs where applicable.
  • Select and participate in local, state, and national seminars and courses designed to increase skills and knowledge related to job requirements.
  • Participate in and support all area events and perform other complete other duties as assigned. 


Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum two years of experience developing and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of public health.
  • Prior experience in public health, community relations, public policy, and/or advocacy. 
  • Must be a self-starter with excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s license and your own reliable transportation with the ability to travel within assigned area 60% of the time for meetings and conferences, as well as the flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required.
  • Able to work with minimum direct supervision, make decisions, and take initiative.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and steward relationships across a diverse population. 
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Internet applications.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Consistent with its mission, the American Lung Association maintains a smoke-free workplace, all employees must abstain from use tobacco in any form, including vaping.


Compensation: Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.  The target hiring range for this position is between $45,000 and $51,000 per annum.
