Job description

Organizational Mission:

The mission of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The ATC seeks to ensure that the 2,197-mile Trail and its surrounding landscape are always protected, resilient and connected for all.

Position Summary

The Communications Intern will provide support to ATC’s Communications department in the creation and management of content across a variety of digital platforms (website, social media, media relations) that highlights the work of the Conservancy. The intern will be a part of a talented and energetic team, supporting a digital summer engagement campaign, website redesign project, and day-to-day efforts to provide the latest information on the A.T. This is a fully remote internship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in content creation for social media platforms, including drafting copy, scheduling posts and producing simple graphics for use on ATC’s Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok.
  • Monitor comments and engage with followers as appropriate on each social channel.
  • Track and communicate media coverage of the ATC’s programs and projects to identify trending story angles and opportunities for media engagement.
  • Work in content management system (WordPress) to help archive and catalogue appalachiantrail.org content in advance of website redesign.
  • Provide project management, administrative, and logistical support to the Communications team as needed.
Qualifications
  • Status as an undergraduate or graduate student or recent graduate interested in environmental/nonprofit communications, marketing, or a related field. 
  • Experience with simple graphic design using tools like Canva. 
  • Strong communication and writing skills. 
  • Strong familiarity with social media platform features and functionality. Prior experience with Hootsuite a plus. 
  • Versatile and collaborative, able to work with a variety of team members. 
  • Commitment to detail and vigilance about deadlines. 
  • Located in an Appalachian Trail State or DC.
  • Must have reliable access to the internet. 

Additional Information:

  • Internship Duration: 8 weeks June 2, 2025 - July 25, 2025
  • Hourly Rate: ($18.00)
  • Minimum of 15 & maximum of 20 hours / week, majority of hours worked during business hours (9 am – 5 pm ET) 
  • Location: Fully Remote in one of the 14 Trail States or DC.
