Job Overview
The VP General Merchandise Manager (VPGMM) is a strategic leadership role. The position requires the ability to develop the vision for multiple categories and execute the assortment plan by channel that aligns with the top line financial plan. The position requires an entrepreneurial mix of visionary strategy development, exceptional financial business acumen, strong understanding of merchandising, and the ability to lead a team. The leader must have a progressive, customer centric approach and hold teams accountable for delivering on sales and profit objectives.
Essential Functions
Strategy
Develop the overall strategy and merchandise direction for their specific categories of business
Coach Direct Reports to develop assortments that support the needs of the customer and the financial objectives of the merchandise division.
Strong understanding of competitive landscape; strengths, weaknesses and strategy.
Business Acumen
Approach the business holistically and have a strong understanding and influence on marketing, assortments, staffing, etc.
Partner with chief merchant on long range plans and capital investments.
Partner with the planning organization to develop assortment plans and manage in-season performance that support Bloomingdale’s financial targets.
Leadership
Fosters an environment that promotes personal development for direct reports and their businesses. Strong inspirational leadership that garners followership.
Facilitate and promote timely communication and cooperation between stores, merchandising functions, and resources to accomplish sales, margin, and service objectives.
Vendor Relationships
Serve as the face of Bloomingdale’s to the vendor community. Articulate the company strategy and negotiate optimal assortment and pricing for our customer.
Work with team to build market relationships and knowledge of market trend, strengths, opportunities and white space. Ensure that Bloomingdale’s obtain merchandise exclusives, product launches, best deliveries, and the desired sales, turn-over and margin plans.
Qualifications And Competencies
Bachelor's Degree from a 4-year college or university
5+ years direct experience
Ideally, 15-plus years of progressive experience in complex, best-in-class consumer and lifestyle oriented companies that ideally create emotional connections with their customers. The broad scope of this role requires a deep understanding of many functions including Buying, Planning, Digital and stores
Must have experience in crafting (and iterating) comprehensive product stories for areas of responsibility that create point of differentiation and market share opportunities
Experience identifying and successfully realizing white space opportunities, assortment optimization initiatives, and growth opportunities
Effectively demonstrate ability to lead change across organization
Excellent leadership, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across functional lines and at many levels
Ability to think creatively, strategically and technically
Essential Physical Requirements
Requires prolonged periods of sitting, with occasional standing
Occasionally requires walking, bending, reaching, hearing and talking
Continuous use of computers and other office equipment
Frequently lift/move up to 25lbs.
