This position is eligible to work from home anywhere in the United States ​. Ideal candidate will be located in Des Moines, IA.

Directs the company’s statutory and GAAP financial reporting under the direct guidance of the CFO. Manages and oversees the Financial Department team (including reinsurance administration) and directs the general accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, taxes, and financial compliance of the company under the direct guidance of the CFO.

Essential Functions:

  • Directs the preparation and analysis of statutory and GAAP financial statements for reporting to senior management, Board of Directors, insurance departments, and regulatory agencies. 

  • Oversees the installation, testing, and training of all fixes and new versions of all accounting software.

  • Builds culture and develops team members while overseeing EMCNL Financial Department team.

  • Collaborates with team members to establish performance goals and monitors status, conducts performance reviews, and provides coaching. Interviews, hires, and recommends salary adjustments for team members.

  • Responsible for the administration and financial guidance toward the company’s profit objectives.

  • Provides input to the Actuarial Department for the financial model and analyzes comparisons to actual operating results. Responsible for the functional cost system for statutory and GAAP expenses.

  • Ensures compliance with all state regulations and company policies. Oversees the daily cash management function.

  • Oversees both internal and external audits of financial statements to ensure the accuracy and integrity of supporting accounting records and systems.

  • Responsible for the calculation of current and deferred federal income taxes that are reviewed and approved by the EMC tax team.

  • Coordinates and works with the EMC tax team in the preparation and filing of corporate federal and state income tax returns.

  • Responsible for the preparation of state and municipal premium tax returns and for company compliance on information return reporting.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field

  • Ten years of accounting, finance, or related experience

  • Five years of supervisory experience

  • Life insurance accounting experience and CPA strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills, & Experience:

  • Advanced knowledge of all systems that affect accounting (both statutory and GAAP)

  • Excellent organizational, management, and analytical abilities

  • Excellent knowledge of Excel and Word

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills

  • Exceptional leadership and organizational skills

  • Excellent planning and prioritization skills

  • Excellent ability to translate technical ideas into more general terms for business customers

  • Excellent ability to gather and analyze a variety of data points to make recommendations to stakeholders

  • Ability to develop strong working relationships to achieve shared goals

  • Knowledge of life reinsurance administration preferred

The hiring salary range for this position will vary based on geographic location, falling within either the $109,818.00-$157,391.00 range or the $121,061.00
$173,534.00 range. A hiring range represents a subset of the full salary range.  The actual salary will depend on several factors, including relevant education, skills, and experience of an applicant, geographic location, and business needs.
