Job description

Job Summary

As the largest online distributor of restaurant supplies and equipment, WebstaurantStore hosts an expansive catalogue with over 430,000 products that are delivered through fast, dependable shipping. Unlike most in the e-commerce arena, almost all of our technological design, development, and systems management is done in-house, allowing us to create custom solutions within an ever-changing market.

This consistent, organic growth is why we’re seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our Quality Enablement team.

While becoming a member of the Quality Enablement team requires technical expertise in automation and pipelines, this role’s primary focus is to act as a servant leader to other teams within engineering, a liaison championing holistic best practices in software quality. This team kickstarts automation projects, drives process improvement initiatives, collaborates with cross-functional teams, and advocates for shift-left testing strategies to ensure the highest ROI in any and all quality activities.

The ideal candidate will possess both technical expertise as well as strong communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex concepts to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

Process Improvement & Technical Leadership:

  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, from technical teams to business leaders.
  • Collaborate with QA leadership in a servant-leader capacity to define and implement best practices in test strategy, planning, and execution.
  • Work closely with quality, development, business, and product teams to iteratively refine acceptance criteria and establish test coverage on tickets before the work makes its way into a sprint.
  • Mentor junior team members on automation activities, testing methodologies and quality best practices.

Analysis:

  • Together within our team, establish what will become standard definitions of test coverage and classification.
  • Using those standards, drive the development of coverage maps for QA teams in the organization.
  • Analyze existing and in-flight test suites using the classifications and maps to clearly identify and articulate gaps in coverage.

Automation:

  • Design, develop and maintain test automation frameworks and pipelines alongside quality engineers to aid their teams.
  • Write robust, reliable, and efficient automation for desktop, web, mobile, and/or API testing.
  • Collaborate with teams to further integrate automation into the CI/CD process.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed while sitting/standing and interfacing with a personal computer.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
  • Requires the regular use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
  • Requires occasional bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights, up to 50lbs.

Remote Work Qualifications

  • Access to a reliable and secure high-speed internet connection. Cable or fiber internet connections (at least 75mbps download/10mbps upload) are preferred, as satellite connections often cannot support the technologies used to perform day-to-day tasks.
  • Access to a home router and modem.
  • A dedicated home office space that is noise- and distraction-free. The space should have strong wireless connection or a wired Ethernet connection (wired connection is preferred, if possible).
  • A valid, physical address (apartment, suite, etc.). PO Boxes are not supported, as a physical address is required for you to receive your computer equipment.
  • The desire and ability to work and communicate with other team members via chat, webcam, etc.
  • Legal residents of one of the following states: (AK, AL, AR, AZ, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NH, NM, NV, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WI, WV, or WY). H-1B Visa Sponsorship Not Available, W2 only.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in software testing, automation, and/or adjacent roles in software/IT.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with implementing or contributing to shifting quality activities earlier in the SDLC.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C#, Java, or Python, with a preference for C#.
  • Experience with test automation tools and frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Playwright, Appium, already comfortable utilizing AI).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and integration with tools like Jenkins, Azure DevOps (the latter preferred).
  • Knowledge of test data management and SQL for test data setup and analysis.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based testing environments and containerization technologies.

Education

  • Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or relevant equivalent industry experience.

Desired Traits

  • Possess natural comfort in communicating amiably and effectively, finding joy in frequently meeting new acquaintances and contacts.
  • Can read the room and serve as a great listener.
  • Being humble, forthcoming, open and honest.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • A mindset for continuous improvement and a passion for driving quality across an entire organization.
  • Never satisfied with the status quo, yet finding comfort and satisfaction in reaching landmarks and milestones in our team’s long-term initiatives at scale.
  • Extensive experience with test strategy development and implementation within various teams and/or organizations (consulting work in this capacity is a plus.)
  • ISTQB Certification or similar.
