Summary

The Director of Engineering is responsible for overseeing the engineering teams that build and maintain Deel’s cutting-edge technology platform. You will lead the development, execution, and scaling of Deel’s product roadmap, ensuring that the company’s engineering efforts are aligned with its business objectives, customer needs, and growth strategies. You will guide a team of engineers and collaborate closely with product, design, and other cross-functional teams to ensure that Deel’s products and solutions are reliable, scalable, secure, and delivered on time.

Responsibilities

  • Guide and mentor Team Leads and their teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and career growth.

  • Streamline processes and optimize workflows to enhance the operational efficiency while building a native payroll engine for a geography with the most complicated tax structure in the world.

  • Ensure teams embrace product thinking, agile practices, delivering high-quality code in a fast-paced, iterative environment.

  • Lead across the full development lifecycle, contributing to system architecture, specifications, and hands-on coding when needed. 

  • Design and maintain scalable, high-performance software solutions using Node.js and React.js, driving innovation through rapid prototyping.

  • Work closely with senior leadership, ensuring engineering strategies align with company goals.

  • Build strong, clear communication channels with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to achieve shared project success.

  • Build and grow product mindset within your engineering org to ensure our Payroll Processing is always accurate, compliant and timely.

Qualifications

  • Experience in building impactful products, with strong knowledge around payroll and related regulations, particularly in the US. 

  • Strong experience in the US Payroll landscape is a MUST HAVE for this role: including onboarding; implementation; regular, off-cycle, correction payroll runs; tax payments, tax filings, notice resolution and amendments.

  • Strong emphasis on building systems for continual reconciliation and tax explainability.

  • Knowledge of the US Money Movement Systems using Wire, ACH is a plus.

  • 10+ years of experience, including 2+ years managing 4+ engineering teams and Team Leads with strong cross functional cooperation.

  • Proficiency in JavaScript, with extensive experience using Node.js, React.js, and TypeScript on the Web UI side and on the Backend. 

  • Skilled in designing distributed systems with a focus on scalability, performance, and reliability.

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills to inspire and develop high-performing, globally distributed teams.

  • Experience building applications on RESTful APIs.

  • Proven ability to manage large-scale projects, prioritize effectively, delegate, and ensure on-time delivery.

  • Collaborative and comfortable working with C-level executives and cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, fully remote environment.
