Purpose

The Recreation Coordinator is a part time position (scheduled to work up to 20 hours per week) that will lead the planning, administration, promotion and growth of entry-level and recreational tennis in Connecticut. This will include overseeing the Tennis in the Parks program in Connecticut, a turn-key program that USTA New England delivers in partnership with park & recreation departments and community serving organizations. USTA New England hires coaches to deliver the program, which is customer-focused, affordable, accessible, and fun introductory tennis for youth and adults. The Recreation Coordinator for Connecticut will also increase access and engagement to tennis across the state through growth of tennis in schools, social match play for youth and adults, and public facility advocacy efforts. This role focuses on building relationships with community stakeholders to promote and expand programming on public courts. The job will include, but is not limited, to the following responsibilities.

This is a remote part-time non-exempt position scheduled to work up to 20 hours per week with occasional in-person attendance required for events such as section programming, all-staff meetings, trainings, etc. If you are community-minded, organized and passionate about recreational sports, this role is for you!

The job will include, but is not limited, to the following responsibilities. 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Tennis in the Parks (TIP) programs in Connecticut. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Lead the hiring, training and onboarding of seasonal coaches.
    • In partnership with the Park and Recreation Department partners, set program schedules, registration.
    • Coordinate consumer marketing efforts with the Marketing Department.
    • Responsible for equipment inventory and distribution for CT programs. 
    • Assist with collecting player data and development of player survey, distribution and assessment of survey results for all programs.
    • Execute bridge program pilot offerings and gather feedback to retain participants looking for a next step following introductory programs.
  • Collaborate with other TIP managers, Coach Development Coordinator and Marketing Department on coach recruitment and marketing plans. 
  • Manage the Park and Recreation youth team tennis league in the Greater Hartford area through coordination with Park and Recreation partners and coaches, scheduling, and player registration.
  • Create and foster school partnerships to offer PE and afterschool programs that grow tennis across communities with a priority on TIP partner areas.
  • Collaborate with the Social Play Manager to grow adult social play offerings through Match Up & Play, USTA flex leagues, social leagues, and social events.
  • Support and evaluate effective advocacy tactics to maintain and improve public park facility infrastructure.
  • Cultivate and manage partnerships with CT facilities, providers, and coaches.
  • May attend in person or virtual USTA CT board meetings as needed.
  • Attend Park and Recreation and Schools conferences in CT as needed. 
  • Travel as needed throughout New England upon approval by supervisor.
  • Additional tasks and projects as assigned by supervisor and the Director, Recreation & Facilities.

  • Minimum qualifications:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Must live in the New England Section of Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts.
    • Experience with Google Suite, to include G-Mail, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive preferred.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver license.
    • Physical Requirements of the Job: Spend frequent time making repetitive motions; spend frequent time sitting, standing and walking; spend frequent time using your hands to handle, reach, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Lifting up to 25lbs with or without assistance.
    • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

Position FAQs
  • How many hours does this position work? This role works 20 hours per week throughout the year. Flexible schedule with majority of work completed between 8am and 6pm, Monday-Friday. Some evening or weekend work will be required.
  • How much does this position pay? Position is non-exempt and paid between $19.00 - $22.00 per hour. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
  • Who does this position work with? The position will report to Eric Driscoll, Schools & Tennis in the Parks Manager, and work within the Director of Recreation & Facilities, Sarah Wishart.
  • Does this position require travel? This position will require travel to our main office in Westborough, MA, and throughout Connecticut.
